Politics – The Lok Sabha on Wednesday suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee for the rest of the ongoing Monsoon Session after allegations surfaced that he made objectionable remarks directed at women Members of Parliament during a confrontation inside the House chamber.
Complaint Leads to Suspension Motion
The action came after the Lok Sabha resumed at 2 pm following its second adjournment of the day. Presiding officer Krishna Prasad Tenneti informed the House that multiple members had submitted a complaint to Speaker Om Birla, stating that Banerjee’s comments were inappropriate and had undermined the dignity of Parliament. Referring to the seriousness of the allegations, Tenneti said the matter required immediate attention.
Resolution Passed by Voice Vote
Following the announcement, Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced a resolution seeking Banerjee’s suspension for the remainder of the Monsoon Session, which is scheduled to conclude on August 13. The proposal was approved through a voice vote even as Opposition members continued raising slogans over issues including the NEET paper leak and other matters. After the motion was adopted, the Chair instructed Banerjee to leave the House premises for the duration of the suspension.
Heated Exchange Inside the House Chamber
The controversy followed an intense verbal exchange involving Banerjee and several MPs from the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI). The incident reportedly occurred inside the Lok Sabha chamber after the House had been adjourned earlier in the day because of Opposition protests. The exact reason behind the confrontation was not immediately known.
Among those involved in the exchange were NCPI MPs Mitali Bagh, Shatabdi Roy and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar. The disagreement drew attention from members present in the chamber, prompting several Opposition MPs to intervene in an effort to calm the situation and prevent it from escalating further.
Speaker Informed About the Incident
After the exchange, Banerjee briefly interacted with fellow Opposition MPs who sought to understand what had happened before he left the chamber. Later, Mitali Bagh, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and several other NCPI members met Speaker Om Birla in his office, where they reportedly brought the matter to his attention and discussed the incident.
The complaint submitted to the Speaker ultimately formed the basis for the disciplinary action taken later in the day during the resumed proceedings of the Lok Sabha.
Political Background of the NCPI Members
The MPs involved in the dispute were previously associated with the Trinamool Congress before joining the Nationalist Citizens Party of India. Their political shift came after TMC’s defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections, when around 20 party MPs broke away and aligned themselves with the NCPI.
Since joining their new political formation, these MPs have been seated separately from TMC members in the Lok Sabha. They have also publicly expressed their support for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
House Adjourned After Continued Protests
Even after Banerjee’s suspension was approved, disruptions in the House continued as Opposition members persisted with protests over various national issues. Amid the ongoing sloganeering, the Chair adjourned the Lok Sabha for the remainder of the day. The suspension will remain in effect until the conclusion of the Monsoon Session on August 13.
