Politics – Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday conveyed his greetings to members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as the organisation marked its 47th Foundation Day. In his message shared on social media platform X, he described the party as the largest political organisation globally and praised its continued influence in shaping India’s political landscape.
Leadership and Party Expansion
In his statement, Singh highlighted the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, noting that the party has expanded significantly under his guidance. He stated that the BJP has not only grown in numbers but has also strengthened its position as a dominant force in national politics. The Bharatiya Janata Party traces its roots to the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, which played a significant role in Indian politics during the post-independence period. Following the Emergency imposed in 1975, several opposition groups came together to form the Janata Party in 1977 with the aim of challenging the ruling Congress.
However, internal disagreements emerged within the Janata Party, particularly over the issue of dual membership involving individuals associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). These differences eventually led to a split, resulting in former Jana Sangh members establishing the Bharatiya Janata Party on April 6, 1980.
Electoral Growth Over the Years
Since its formation, the BJP has witnessed a steady rise in electoral influence. The party emerged as the single largest party in the Lok Sabha elections of 1996, 1998, and 1999, marking a significant shift in India’s political dynamics.
Over time, it has further consolidated its position, achieving major victories in national elections. In the 2019 general elections, the BJP secured 303 seats in the Lok Sabha, which remains the highest number of seats won by the party to date.
