Parliament – The political confrontation over the student protest issue intensified on Wednesday as Congress leaders accused the Centre of preventing a discussion on concerns linked to education and youth, while reiterating support for students demanding accountability over the alleged examination irregularities.
Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, dressed in black along with several opposition leaders, criticised the government over what she described as restrictions on democratic expression inside and outside Parliament. Speaking to reporters in the Parliament House complex, she alleged that opposition members were repeatedly prevented from raising issues concerning students and the education system during the ongoing Monsoon Session.
Opposition Raises Concerns Over Parliamentary Debate
Priyanka Gandhi claimed that the opposition was not being given sufficient opportunity to discuss matters affecting young people. She questioned the functioning of Parliament, stating that the Leader of the Opposition and other members were allegedly stopped whenever they attempted to speak on the issue. According to her, meaningful debate is an essential part of a democratic system, and limiting such discussions weakens parliamentary accountability.
She also referred to the opposition’s protest held outside the Prime Minister’s official residence a day earlier, maintaining that peaceful demonstrations and freedom of expression are protected democratic rights. She argued that raising public concerns through non-violent protests should not be viewed as undemocratic.
Black Attire Worn in Solidarity With Students
Several opposition MPs, including Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, arrived in black clothing as a symbolic gesture of support for students protesting over the alleged examination controversy. The demonstration outside Parliament also highlighted allegations of police action against protesting students.
Priyanka Gandhi said the focus of the opposition remained on the concerns of students rather than on the detention of political leaders. She maintained that students across the country were seeking justice and transparency, adding that the issue had generated concern among parents, teachers and educational communities alike.
Congress Questions Government Priorities
Addressing the broader issue of public spending, Priyanka Gandhi criticised the government’s financial priorities. She referred to the allocation for the education sector and contrasted it with the value of loans written off for large corporate groups. She argued that greater financial attention should be directed towards students, farmers and economically weaker sections, claiming that young people deserve stronger support to secure their future.
According to her, students invest years of hard work and preparation in competitive examinations, and any uncertainty surrounding the examination process directly affects their academic and professional aspirations.
Leaders Detained After Protest Near Prime Minister’s Residence
The political dispute escalated on Tuesday when senior opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav, staged a sit-in near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence while demanding his resignation over the issue.
The protest took place in a high-security area, following which senior government officials, including Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh and Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, reached the location to hold discussions with the protesting leaders. However, the talks failed to produce an agreement.
Police later removed and detained several opposition leaders from the protest site. Rahul Gandhi was taken to Chhatrasal Stadium before being released after a few hours. Priyanka Gandhi and some Members of Parliament were taken to Mandir Marg Police Station, where Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi later met them. Other detained leaders were reportedly taken to Kingsway Camp Police Station and were also released later.
Rahul Gandhi Demands Discussion on Student Issues
Following his release, Rahul Gandhi said the opposition had decided to protest outside the Prime Minister’s residence after concluding that the government was not prepared to schedule a parliamentary discussion on the student issue.
He stated that the objective of the demonstration was to draw national attention to the concerns raised by protesting students, including allegations of police action against them. Rahul Gandhi also said students were demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, action against those responsible for the alleged police excesses and withdrawal of cases filed against protesters.
He reiterated that the opposition considers the issue one of the country’s most significant public concerns and urged the government to allow a detailed debate in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
