Monsoon – Rajasthan Receives Widespread Rainfall as Active Weather System Lowers Temperatures
Monsoon –The southwest monsoon has become active once again across Rajasthan, bringing widespread rainfall, cooler weather and improved water availability in several regions. A fresh weather system that developed over the Bay of Bengal has strengthened monsoon activity, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for four districts on Wednesday, while the rest of the state remains under a yellow alert.
Heavy Rainfall Affects Several Districts
Many parts of Rajasthan witnessed steady to heavy showers from the early hours of Wednesday. Udaipur experienced its most intense spell of rainfall this monsoon season, while Kota and Baran received exceptionally heavy rain exceeding five inches. The downpour caused rivers to overflow, waterlogging in low-lying areas and increased water levels in reservoirs, leading officials to release water from the Kalisindh Dam.
Light to moderate rainfall was also reported from Jaipur, Ajmer, Kotputli-Behror and several neighbouring districts, providing relief from prolonged heat and humidity.
IMD Predicts Continued Monsoon Activity
According to the Meteorological Centre in Jaipur, monsoon conditions are expected to stay active across Rajasthan until July 25. The department has warned that many districts could continue receiving moderate to heavy rainfall over the next few days.
Rainfall data released by the IMD showed that Chhipabarod in Baran district recorded the highest rainfall during the past 24 hours with 130 mm. Sultanpur in Kota followed with 101 mm. Significant rainfall was also observed in Hanumangarh, Bundi, Alwar, Karauli, Jhunjhunu and Sawai Madhopur. Meanwhile, districts including Dausa, Jhalawar, Tonk, Nagaur, Udaipur, Churu, Sri Ganganagar and Bharatpur received light to moderate showers.
Udaipur and Ajmer Witness Major Weather Impact
Udaipur saw nearly an hour of intense rainfall on Wednesday morning, marking the city’s strongest rain spell of the current season. The sudden change in weather brought temperatures down noticeably and encouraged residents and visitors to return to popular outdoor locations once the rain eased.
Ajmer also experienced heavy rainfall that resulted in water accumulation across several neighbourhoods, disrupting traffic movement. An under-construction drain on Taragarh Road in Subhash Nagar overflowed onto the roadway, creating hazardous conditions. During the rain, a motorcyclist accidentally entered a rain-filled pothole but was safely rescued by local residents. The district recorded around 39.4 mm of rainfall over the last 24 hours, reducing the seasonal rainfall shortfall while making weather conditions significantly more pleasant.
Rising River Levels and Dam Water Release
Continuous rainfall across the Hadoti region has caused water levels in the Parvan and Kalisindh rivers to rise considerably. In Manoharthana of Jhalawar district, the Parvan River rose nearly three feet, submerging a small bridge and partially flooding a nearby temple area.
With additional inflows arriving from neighbouring Madhya Pradesh, authorities opened one gate of the Kalisindh Dam by approximately 0.10 metres. Around 426 cusecs of water were released to regulate the increasing reservoir level and ensure safe water management.
Cooler Temperatures Bring Relief Across Rajasthan
The renewed monsoon activity has provided welcome relief from hot and humid conditions across much of Rajasthan. Maximum daytime temperatures dropped between four and nine degrees Celsius in cities such as Jaipur, Alwar, Pilani, Sikar, Ajmer, Churu and Sri Ganganagar.
Although Jaisalmer remained the warmest location in the state with a maximum temperature of 39.6 degrees Celsius, no city crossed the 40-degree mark for the first time in nearly two weeks. Weather officials have advised residents to remain alert as heavy rainfall is expected to continue in several districts under the existing weather alerts through July 25.
