Parliament – Rural households received fewer average workdays under the MGNREGS scheme in 2025-26, while Parliament also witnessed disruptions over the NEET paper leak issue and the government released the latest Foreign Medical Graduate Examination results.
The Union government informed Parliament on Tuesday that rural households received an average of 43 days of employment under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) during the 2025-26 financial year. The information was presented in the Lok Sabha by Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan while responding to a starred question. The latest figures indicate a decline from the average of 50 workdays provided per household during the previous financial year, 2024-25.
Government Shares Latest MGNREGS Employment Figures
According to the minister, the updated data reflects the average number of employment days generated under the rural job guarantee programme during the current financial year. MGNREGS remains one of the country’s largest rural welfare initiatives, offering wage employment to eligible households through public works. The figures presented in Parliament highlighted a reduction in average employment compared to the previous year, though no additional reasons for the decline were detailed during the reply.
Rajya Sabha Adjourned Following Opposition Protest
Parliamentary proceedings in the Rajya Sabha were repeatedly disrupted on Tuesday after opposition members demanded a discussion on police action against demonstrators protesting the alleged NEET paper leak in New Delhi. Amid continuous protests and sloganeering, the House was adjourned for the remainder of the day.
The disruptions also prevented the scheduled discussion on the proposed National Honours Bill, which seeks to amend the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971. As the protests continued, the legislative business listed for the day could not be taken up.
Centre Releases FMGE June 2026 Performance Data
In another update presented in Parliament, the Centre shared the latest performance statistics for the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) conducted in June 2026. Responding to a written question in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel stated that the overall pass percentage for the examination stood at 12.78%.
The minister also clarified that candidates appearing for the examination for the first time performed significantly better than the overall average. Among fresh candidates, the pass percentage exceeded 35%, indicating a comparatively stronger success rate for first-time examinees.
