Loan Dispute Turns Violent

According to investigators, the accused, Sonu, 24, and his younger brother Mehboob Ali, 20, lived in Prem Nagar-III in Kirari Suleman Nagar. Sonu runs a small hotel in the locality, and Ali assists him with daily operations. The two had reportedly borrowed Rs 4 lakh from Ajay Kumar, a resident of Rohini’s Sector 20, at an interest rate of 10 percent.

Police said Kumar had been pressing for repayment in recent weeks. On February 19, he visited the brothers at their residence to collect the money. Instead of settling the dues, the meeting escalated into violence. Investigators allege that the brothers attacked Kumar with a knife inside the house.

Victim Reported Missing

When Kumar did not return home, his family grew concerned. A missing person complaint was filed at Aman Vihar police station later that day. Family members told officers that Kumar had left home on his motorcycle and was last seen heading toward Prem Nagar-II.

Kumar was known locally for supplying polythene bags to small shopkeepers. In addition to his business, he also lent money on interest to people in need of short-term financial support. Based on a statement given by his brother, police registered a case during the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday and began an investigation.

CCTV Footage Raises Suspicion

During the initial inquiry, officers scanned CCTV footage from nearby streets and spoke to residents in the area. A breakthrough came when cameras captured a man with his face covered parking Kumar’s motorcycle near an isolated stretch in Prem Nagar. The suspicious movement of the vehicle indicated possible foul play.

Investigators tracked the motorcycle’s location and examined technical evidence, including call detail records and mobile phone data. These leads eventually pointed toward the two brothers. Police detained Sonu and Ali for questioning after gathering sufficient preliminary evidence.

Confession and Recovery of Body

During interrogation, the accused allegedly admitted to killing Kumar after they found themselves unable to repay the borrowed amount. Police said the brothers disposed of the body in the Najafgarh drain near Chandan Vihar, in the Nilothi Extension area, in an attempt to conceal the crime.

Following their disclosure, police teams searched the indicated location and recovered the body. It was subsequently sent to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

A senior police officer stated that the investigation is ongoing, and further forensic analysis is being conducted. Authorities are also examining whether anyone else had knowledge of the incident or assisted the accused in any manner.

Financial Pressure Under Scanner

Officials noted that financial disputes often form the backdrop of violent crimes, particularly when high-interest informal loans are involved. In this case, the accused reportedly struggled to arrange the repayment amount, which led to mounting pressure.

Police are compiling all evidence, including forensic findings and digital records, to build a comprehensive case. The accused remain in custody and will be produced before a court as legal proceedings move forward.

The incident has raised concerns among residents about informal lending practices and personal safety. Meanwhile, Kumar’s family is awaiting the completion of the autopsy and further legal action in the case.
