MunicipalElections – AAP Sweeps Punjab Civic Polls With Strong Statewide Performance
MunicipalElections – The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) delivered a commanding performance in Punjab’s municipal elections, securing a majority of seats across several municipal corporations, councils, and local bodies. The outcome has been viewed as a significant endorsement of the state government’s governance agenda led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Party leaders described the results as a reflection of voter confidence in their development-focused policies.

AAP Leads Across Most Urban Local Bodies
Official figures released by the Punjab State Election Commission showed that AAP won 958 of the 1,977 wards contested across the state. The Congress emerged as the second-largest party with 397 wards, while the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) secured 191 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 172 wards, and Independent candidates registered a notable presence by capturing 251 wards. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) secured seven wards.
A small number of ward results remained pending as vote counting continued into Friday evening.
Strong Showing in Municipal Corporations
AAP recorded impressive victories in several key municipal corporations. The party secured 36 wards in Barnala, 31 in Bathinda, and 30 wards each in both Moga and Batala. In Mohali, AAP emerged as the largest party by winning 26 wards.
The Congress maintained a strong position in Kapurthala, where it won 31 wards. Meanwhile, the BJP achieved significant success in Pathankot and Abohar, emerging as the largest party in Pathankot and securing 28 wards in Abohar. Each of these municipal corporations consists of 50 wards.
AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal thanked voters for supporting the party and credited the result to the work carried out by the state government.
Opposition Raises Concerns Over Poll Conduct
Following the announcement of results, opposition parties questioned the fairness of the electoral process and accused the ruling party of taking advantage of administrative resources during the campaign.
The elections were conducted on May 26 using ballot papers across 102 urban local bodies. These included eight municipal corporations, 75 municipal councils, and 19 nagar panchayats. Voter participation stood at 63.94 percent.
Of the total 1,977 wards, candidates in 80 wards were elected without opposition. More than 7,500 candidates contested the elections, making it one of the largest local electoral exercises in the state.
Key Results From Important Municipal Councils
In Dhuri, the assembly constituency represented by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, AAP secured 19 of the 21 wards. Independent candidates won the remaining two seats.
AAP also delivered a strong performance in Gidderbaha, winning 17 of the 19 wards. Congress candidates managed victories in the remaining two wards. The constituency is considered politically significant as it has traditionally been associated with Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring.
However, Congress performed better in Chamkaur Sahib Municipal Council, where it captured seven of the 13 wards. AAP and Independent candidates won three wards each. The area has previously been represented by former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.
In Majitha Municipal Council, AAP secured seven wards, narrowly ahead of the Shiromani Akali Dal, which won six seats. The constituency is widely associated with senior Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia.
Results Carry Weight Ahead of Assembly Elections
Political observers view the municipal election outcome as an important indicator ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections scheduled next year. The results provide insight into voter sentiment and party strength across urban regions of the state.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stated that the verdict reflected public appreciation for his government’s work and suggested that voters had chosen development-oriented politics over divisive approaches.
While AAP emerged as the dominant force across much of Punjab, the BJP improved its overall tally compared to previous local elections. Congress also retained influence in selected regions such as Kapurthala and Chamkaur Sahib, although it suffered setbacks in areas where it had historically enjoyed strong support, including Gidderbaha.
