Mobility – DMRC Plans Long-Term Traffic Study for Central Vista Area
Mobility – The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has initiated plans for an extensive study aimed at addressing growing traffic pressure in the Central Vista region while maintaining the area’s historic identity and ensuring seamless movement during official ceremonies and high-security events. The proposed assessment will take into account transportation requirements and projected traffic patterns through the year 2060.

Focus on Key Administrative Corridors
The study will cover several of New Delhi’s most heavily used road networks located within the capital’s administrative hub. Among the stretches identified for detailed examination are C-Hexagon, Man Singh Marg, Rafi Ahmad Kidwai Marg and Teen Murti Marg. These routes frequently experience congestion due to daily commuter movement, government-related activities and special events held in the national capital.
According to the proposal, the objective is to identify practical solutions that can improve traffic flow without compromising the unique architectural character and environmental significance of the Central Vista precinct.
Exploring Infrastructure-Based Solutions
As part of the exercise, planners will evaluate various infrastructure options that could help ease bottlenecks across the area. Potential measures include the construction of tunnels, underpasses and other traffic management facilities designed to streamline vehicle movement.
Officials have indicated that any recommendations emerging from the study must carefully balance mobility needs with heritage conservation. The Central Vista zone holds national importance and contains several prominent government buildings, ceremonial routes and landscaped public spaces, making any infrastructure intervention particularly sensitive.
Consultancy Bids Invited for Feasibility Assessment
To move the project forward, DMRC has invited bids from consultancy firms interested in undertaking the feasibility study. The selected consultant will be tasked with conducting a comprehensive review of existing traffic conditions and identifying current challenges affecting road users in the area.
The consultancy assignment will also involve collecting traffic data, assessing travel demand and examining how transportation needs are likely to evolve over the coming decades. Based on these findings, the consultant will prepare recommendations aimed at improving overall mobility and reducing congestion.
Planning for Future Transport Demand
One of the key aspects of the study will be forecasting long-term traffic growth and evaluating whether the current road infrastructure can accommodate future demand. With increasing urbanisation and rising vehicle numbers, authorities are seeking solutions that can support efficient transportation while preserving the visual and ecological landscape of the Central Vista district.
The study is expected to provide a roadmap for future infrastructure planning and traffic management strategies in one of the country’s most important administrative and ceremonial zones. By combining mobility improvements with heritage protection, officials hope to create a sustainable framework capable of meeting transportation needs for decades to come
