LiteracyMission – Andhra District Sets Ambitious Adult Education Goal for 2026
LiteracyMission – The district administration has announced a major literacy campaign under the Ullas Akshara Andhra programme, aiming to bring thousands of non-literate adults into the education system during the current academic year. District Collector CM Sai Kanth Varma said authorities have identified a target of 77,501 learners for the district as part of the statewide mission.

Statewide Push Towards Full Adult Literacy
Speaking about the programme, the Collector stated that the Andhra Pradesh government has intensified efforts to improve adult literacy levels across the state during 2026–27. The larger objective is to achieve complete adult literacy in Andhra Pradesh by 2029 through coordinated educational campaigns and community participation.
According to officials, the government has fixed a statewide target of educating nearly 25 lakh adults during the present phase of the programme. Authorities believe the initiative will help improve basic reading, writing, and numeracy skills among people who could not complete formal education earlier in life.
Daily Classes Planned at Anganwadi Centres
Under the literacy mission, special classes will be organised every day between 5 pm and 7 pm at nearby Anganwadi centres. Officials said the programme has been designed to suit working adults by holding sessions during evening hours.
A structured 100-hour learning module will be introduced for enrolled participants. The curriculum will include classroom teaching, practical exercises, and audio-visual learning methods to make lessons easier to understand. Learners will also receive study materials, worksheets, and practice booklets free of cost.
In addition, around 48 varieties of digital educational videos will be used during training sessions to support classroom instruction and improve participation levels among learners.
Focus on Basic Numeracy and Reading Skills
As part of the campaign, the administration will also implement the Foundation Letters and Numeracy Course (FLNC), which is intended to strengthen basic literacy and arithmetic abilities. Officials said the programme has been prepared to ensure that learners gain practical knowledge useful in everyday life.
The Collector noted that several community-based organisations and government departments would work together for the successful execution of the programme. DWCRA groups and labour unions are expected to play an active role in identifying learners and encouraging participation.
Departments including DRDA, MEPMA, SGSW, and Panchayati Raj and Rural Development will coordinate field-level activities and monitoring work throughout the campaign period.
Monitoring Committees to Oversee Programme
To ensure smooth implementation, committees will be formed at district, mandal, and municipal levels. These teams will supervise enrolment, attendance, teaching quality, and overall progress of the literacy mission.
Officials also plan to conduct awareness drives across villages and urban localities to encourage families to participate. Door-to-door campaigns are expected to be carried out to identify eligible learners and explain the benefits of adult education.
Village-level assessment examinations are scheduled to take place in March 2027 to evaluate the progress of participants after completion of the training sessions.
Registration and Training Schedule Finalised
Authorities said the identification and registration process for both learners and instructors will be completed by June 30. Training programmes for instructors are scheduled to continue until July 20 to prepare teaching staff before classes officially begin.
The literacy classes are expected to commence from July 21 this year and continue until March 15 next year. Officials believe the extended schedule will provide sufficient time for learners to complete the course successfully.
The Collector added that last year’s literacy programme in the district received a positive response and was implemented effectively. Building on that experience, the administration is preparing this year’s campaign with detailed planning and stronger monitoring mechanisms to improve results further.
