The decision emerged from extensive discussions held in New Delhi on Monday between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing.
The meeting reflected the shared commitment of both neighboring countries to build a stronger partnership rooted in longstanding historical ties and close people-to-people connections. Leaders from both sides emphasized the importance of working together to promote stability, economic growth, and regional prosperity.
Focus on Development and Regional Stability
During the talks, Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s continued support for efforts aimed at fostering peace and constructive dialogue in Myanmar. He also expressed India’s willingness to share its experiences in areas such as federal governance, institution-building, and economic development.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the discussions covered a broad range of issues and highlighted the mutual desire to further strengthen cooperation across multiple sectors. Both governments recognized the value of enhanced collaboration in addressing common challenges while creating new opportunities for growth.
India Reaffirms Commitment as a Trusted Partner
Indian officials reiterated that Myanmar remains an important partner within India’s broader regional engagement framework. Prime Minister Modi noted that India has consistently stood beside Myanmar during times of difficulty and remains committed to supporting its neighbor through various development and humanitarian initiatives.
The discussions also reflected the significance of India’s regional policies, including Neighbourhood First, Act East, and MAHASAGAR, which place considerable emphasis on strengthening ties with neighboring countries and promoting connectivity throughout the region.
Diplomatic Engagements Continue in New Delhi
As part of his official schedule, President U Min Aung Hlaing is set to meet President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The Myanmar leader will also attend the cultural exhibition titled “The Light and the Lotus: Relics of the Awakened One” at the Raipithora cultural complex in the national capital.
The visit marks President Hlaing’s first official trip to India since assuming office. He is accompanied by a senior delegation that includes cabinet ministers, government officials, and representatives from the business community.
Business and Cultural Exchanges on Agenda
Beyond political discussions, the Myanmar President is expected to travel to Mumbai, where he will participate in business-related engagements and visit key locations linked to economic cooperation. These interactions are expected to encourage stronger commercial ties and investment opportunities between the two countries.
The visit also highlights the growing importance of cultural and economic exchanges as both nations seek to broaden the scope of their partnership.
High-Level Meetings Ahead of Official Talks
Before the meeting with Prime Minister Modi, President Hlaing held discussions with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in New Delhi. Earlier, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also met the Myanmar leader and welcomed his positive approach toward expanding cooperation between the two nations.
President Hlaing began his five-day India visit with a visit to the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, one of Buddhism’s most revered pilgrimage sites. The visit underscored the deep cultural and spiritual links shared by India and Myanmar.
Indian officials believe the visit will contribute to stronger bilateral engagement and help advance cooperation across political, economic, security, and cultural spheres, further deepening relations between the two neighboring countries.
