Housing Safety – Authorities have launched a detailed investigation into the Taratala warehouse collapse as rescue efforts continue and accountability remains under scrutiny.
Political Allegations Follow Deadly Taratala Warehouse Collapse
The investigation into the collapse of an under-construction warehouse shed in Kolkata’s Taratala area has gathered momentum after West Bengal minister Dilip Ghosh claimed that influential political figures could also come under scrutiny. The tragic incident claimed five lives and left 20 others injured, prompting the state government to initiate a detailed inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the structure’s failure.
Investigation Expands Beyond Initial Arrests
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Ghosh said the ongoing probe would examine every possible angle, including allegations of corruption linked to the construction project. According to him, the investigation would not be limited to the three individuals already arrested, which include a building supervisor and two labour suppliers.
He stated that authorities are committed to identifying everyone responsible, regardless of their position or influence. Ghosh also expressed concern over the employment of migrant labourers at construction sites, saying innocent workers continue to bear the consequences of negligence and poor safety practices.
Questions Raised Over Construction Standards
The minister questioned how such a large under-construction warehouse could collapse before completion, suggesting that the incident highlighted possible irregularities in construction quality and project oversight. He remarked that the consequences could have been far more severe if the building had been occupied after completion.
Drawing comparisons with previous incidents, Ghosh alleged that infrastructure failures had occurred under earlier administrations as well. He referred to major fire incidents in markets during the Communist Party of India (Marxist) government and cited bridge and flyover collapses during the Trinamool Congress administration, arguing that repeated structural failures point to deeper concerns over governance and corruption.
Casualties and Medical Condition of the Injured
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari confirmed that the death toll from the Taratala accident has reached five. A total of 20 people sustained injuries, with two remaining in the Intensive Critical Care Unit (ICCU), while the remaining 18 were reported to be out of danger following treatment.
After visiting the injured at SSKM Hospital, the Chief Minister assured that the government was closely monitoring the medical care being provided and that every effort was being made to support those affected by the accident.
Rescue Operations Continue at the Site
The warehouse shed collapsed at approximately 12:07 pm on Tuesday, trapping several workers beneath the debris. Rescue operations have continued with teams from the Indian Army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) working alongside local emergency personnel to search the site and remove the rubble.
Officials are expected to determine whether violations of construction regulations, engineering standards, or safety protocols contributed to the collapse. Investigators will also examine the approvals, supervision, and execution of the project to establish responsibility.
The findings of the inquiry are expected to play a significant role in determining legal action against those found accountable while also shaping future measures aimed at improving construction safety and preventing similar incidents across the state.
