Higher Education – Delhi Approves Landmark Ambedkar University Campus Expansion Project
Higher Education – The Delhi government has approved a major higher education project that will significantly strengthen academic infrastructure in the national capital. The decision paves the way for the construction of a modern campus for Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University Delhi at Dheerpur, offering advanced educational facilities and expanded opportunities for students.

The Delhi government’s Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC), led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, has cleared the proposal for the development of a new campus of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University Delhi (AUD) in Dheerpur, located in north Delhi. The ambitious project carries an estimated investment of nearly ₹1,668 crore and is expected to improve access to quality higher education while creating a future-ready academic environment for thousands of students.
Major Boost for Higher Education
According to the Chief Minister, the approval marks a significant step toward expanding Delhi’s higher education ecosystem. She said the project reflects the government’s commitment to providing students with modern educational infrastructure and improved learning opportunities. The Public Works Department (PWD) will now oversee the next stages of implementation and construction.
Officials stated that the upcoming campus will support the growing demand for quality university education in the capital while offering facilities that meet international academic standards. The project is also expected to strengthen the city’s educational capacity for years to come.
Phased Development to Serve Thousands of Students
The proposed campus will spread across nearly 20 hectares, equivalent to around 50 acres, and will be developed in multiple phases. Once completed, it is expected to accommodate approximately 8,000 students. The initial phase has been planned to provide academic infrastructure for around 5,400 students.
Alongside teaching facilities, the campus will include hostel accommodation for 840 students, ensuring better residential support for learners from different regions. Residential quarters for faculty members and university staff are also part of the master plan.
Modern Facilities Planned Across the Campus
The new campus has been designed to provide a comprehensive educational experience. Plans include spacious academic buildings, a central library, administrative offices, student service centres, and a large auditorium capable of seating 2,500 people. Sports facilities, parking areas, and other student-focused amenities will also be developed to create a balanced and inclusive learning environment.
Government officials said the infrastructure is intended to encourage academic excellence, research, innovation, and overall student development while meeting the evolving needs of higher education.
Focus on Sustainable Development
Environmental sustainability has been integrated into the campus design from the beginning. The project is proposed to meet GRIHA 5-Star green building standards, with renewable energy solutions such as solar power and geothermal energy forming part of its infrastructure.
Additional sustainability measures will include rainwater harvesting, wastewater recycling, and advanced water conservation systems. These initiatives aim to reduce the environmental impact of the campus while promoting responsible resource management.
Statutory Clearances Already in Place
The project has already received important statutory approvals from the Delhi Urban Art Commission (DUAC) and the Delhi Fire Service. These clearances are expected to facilitate a smoother implementation process as construction activities move forward.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta described the approval as an important milestone in the expansion of Delhi’s higher education network. She said the government’s vision extends beyond constructing academic buildings, focusing instead on creating institutions that support world-class education, research, innovation, and the holistic development of students.
