Heatwave – Delhi authorities have intensified efforts to strengthen heat protection measures across the city, with a high-level review meeting assessing the implementation of the ongoing heat wave response plan and outlining additional steps to improve public support during extreme weather conditions.
Review of Ongoing Heat Relief Measures
Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta jointly reviewed the progress of the city’s heat action strategy during a meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA). The discussion focused on evaluating the effectiveness of current relief measures and identifying areas where services could be expanded to reach more residents during the summer season.
Officials stressed the importance of maintaining uninterrupted relief operations across the national capital, particularly as rising temperatures continue to impact daily life in several parts of the city.
Multiple Departments Asked to Work Together
During the meeting, the Lieutenant Governor emphasized that heat-relief efforts should function as a unified operation involving all relevant departments and public agencies. These include the Revenue Department, Transport Department, Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Labour Department, and several other government bodies.
According to officials, clear instructions were issued to ensure smooth coordination among departments so that citizens receive timely assistance without administrative delays. The focus, authorities said, must remain on delivering practical solutions rather than being hindered by departmental boundaries or overlapping responsibilities.
Public Welfare Remains the Primary Focus
An official statement released after the meeting highlighted that residents expect visible action on the ground, especially during periods of extreme heat. Authorities were therefore directed to operate with a common objective of protecting public health and ensuring immediate access to relief services wherever required.
The meeting was attended by senior government representatives, including ministers Ashish Sood and Parvesh Verma. Also present were the Chief Secretary, Commissioner of Police, Municipal Corporation of Delhi Commissioner, New Delhi Municipal Council Chairperson, Vice-Chairman of the DDA, and heads of various concerned departments.
Expansion of Citywide Heat Response
Officials noted that Delhi introduced a large-scale, multi-department heat mitigation program last year following a national call for stronger preparedness measures. The initiative was designed to safeguard residents across all 13 districts through coordinated planning and resource deployment.
During the review, concerns were raised regarding the availability of relief infrastructure in densely populated areas. Authorities observed that a single mobile relief vehicle assigned to each district may not be sufficient considering the city’s large population and geographic spread.
Focus on Capacity Building and Long-Term Solutions
To address these concerns, departments have been directed to increase operational capacity and expand the scale of relief services. Officials believe that broader coverage and additional resources will help improve emergency response capabilities during prolonged heat waves.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of adopting long-term urban cooling strategies. Authorities referred to the need for sustainable measures aimed at reducing heat accumulation in built-up areas and addressing the challenges associated with the Urban Heat Island effect.
By combining immediate relief efforts with future-focused climate adaptation measures, Delhi’s administration aims to create a stronger framework for protecting residents from the growing impact of extreme temperatures while improving overall urban resilience.
