Heatwave – Delhi Sees Early Surge in Temperatures With Yellow Alert Issued
Heatwave – Parts of the national capital experienced the first spell of intense summer heat on Friday, with temperatures climbing sharply in several areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert, cautioning residents that similar weather conditions are likely to persist into Saturday.

Heatwave Conditions Reported at Select Monitoring Stations
While the primary weather station at Safdarjung did not officially meet the criteria for a heatwave, other locations in the city did record such conditions. According to IMD data, both Lodhi Road and Ridge stations reported temperatures high enough to fall within the heatwave category.
At Safdarjung, which is considered the base station for Delhi’s weather observations, the maximum temperature reached 41.9 degrees Celsius. This was 4.2 degrees above the seasonal average and slightly higher than the previous day’s reading by 0.2 degrees.
Temperature Trends Show Gradual Rise
The minimum temperature at Safdarjung stood at 24.5 degrees Celsius. This figure was 1.8 degrees above normal but showed a slight dip of 0.9 degrees compared to Thursday night. Despite the minor overnight relief, daytime heat remained significant, indicating the onset of a hotter phase.
Meteorologists note that consistent above-normal temperatures over consecutive days are often an early indicator of developing heatwave conditions, especially during the transition from spring to peak summer.
Criteria for Declaring a Heatwave
The IMD defines a heatwave based on both absolute temperature and deviation from normal levels. A heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature crosses 40 degrees Celsius and remains 4.5 to 6.4 degrees above the usual seasonal benchmark.
Using this criterion, Lodhi Road recorded a maximum of 41.8 degrees Celsius, which was 4.8 degrees above normal. Meanwhile, Ridge station registered an even higher temperature of 43.1 degrees Celsius, standing 4.7 degrees above the seasonal average. These readings clearly met the official threshold for heatwave classification.
Weather Department Issues Advisory
In response to the rising temperatures, the IMD issued a yellow alert for Delhi, signaling that the heat conditions could intensify or continue in the coming days. A yellow alert typically advises people to stay cautious and prepare for potentially uncomfortable weather, especially during peak afternoon hours.
Officials have recommended avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, staying hydrated, and taking necessary precautions, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
Early Arrival of Intense Summer Raises Concerns
The early appearance of heatwave-like conditions has drawn attention from weather experts, who point out that such patterns may become more frequent. Although short-term fluctuations are common during this period, sustained high temperatures could indicate a challenging summer ahead.
Urban areas like Delhi are particularly sensitive to heat due to factors such as dense construction, reduced green cover, and high vehicular emissions, all of which contribute to the urban heat island effect.
Outlook for the Coming Days
Forecasts suggest that temperatures may remain elevated over the weekend, with no immediate signs of a significant drop. Residents are advised to monitor official updates and take preventive measures as needed.
With summer still in its early stages, authorities are closely tracking temperature trends to assess whether further alerts or advisories may be required in the days ahead.
