Cyber Fraud – Gujarat Launches e-Zero FIR System to Speed Up Financial Crime Response
Cyber Fraud – Gujarat has taken a major step toward strengthening its response to cyber financial crimes by introducing an e-Zero FIR system that allows victims to begin the legal process without visiting a police station. The new digital service is intended to reduce delays in investigations and improve the chances of recovering money lost in online fraud cases.
New Digital System Introduced in Gandhinagar
The initiative was officially launched in Gandhinagar on Monday by Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi. Developed with support from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), functioning under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, the system aims to simplify complaint registration while enabling law enforcement agencies to react more quickly to financial cybercrime incidents.
According to the new process, anyone reporting cyber financial fraud through the national cybercrime helpline, 1930, will have an electronic Zero FIR generated automatically. The complaint will then be digitally transferred to the police station that has jurisdiction over the case, allowing officers to begin the legal process without unnecessary procedural delays.
Focus on Faster Action for Victims
During the launch event, Harsh Sanghavi said the state government continues to expand the use of technology to make policing more efficient, transparent, and citizen-friendly. He noted that victims can now register complaints directly from their homes instead of making a personal visit to a police station.
He also explained that quicker registration of cases is expected to improve the likelihood of freezing suspicious transactions and preventing further financial losses. Timely intervention remains one of the most important factors in cyber fraud investigations, especially when stolen funds are moved rapidly through multiple accounts.
Police Directed to Ensure Prompt Investigation
Director General of Police Gyanendra Singh Malik has instructed police units across Gujarat to treat cyber financial fraud complaints with urgency and sensitivity. He emphasized that officers should ensure every complaint receives prompt attention so that victims can access justice without avoidable delays.
Inspector General of Police Bipin Ahire, who heads the Cyber Centre of Excellence, explained that the system has been created in coordination with I4C to make complaint handling more streamlined. Once an e-Zero FIR is generated through the helpline, it will automatically reach the concerned police station for further processing.
Police officials will then contact the complainant to collect additional details, complete the legal formalities required for FIR registration, and immediately begin the investigation. This process is expected to eliminate several manual steps that previously slowed the initial response.
First Case Demonstrates System’s Potential
State authorities also shared details of the first case registered under the newly introduced mechanism. The complaint came from a resident of Ahmedabad who became the target of a cyber fraud involving a so-called “digital arrest” scam.
Following the complaint, the Cyber Crime Department acted without delay and was able to prevent a financial loss exceeding Rs 15.76 lakh. Officials described the case as an early example of how rapid complaint registration and immediate police action can help protect victims from significant financial damage.
Senior Officials Participate in Launch
The inauguration programme was attended by Principal Chief Secretary of the Home Department Sanjeev Kumar, Director General of Police Gyanendra Singh Malik, and senior officers from the state’s Cyber Crime Cell.
Rajesh Kumar, Chief Executive Officer of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, participated virtually. Police Commissioners, Range Heads, Superintendents of Police, Cyber Crime Police Inspectors, and other senior officers from across Gujarat also joined the event through the Gujarat State Wide Area Network, highlighting the state’s coordinated approach toward strengthening cybercrime enforcement.
