Healthcare Infrastructure – Delhi Approves Major Medical College Project in Dwarka
Healthcare Infrastructure – The Delhi government has cleared an ambitious plan to establish a modern medical college and residential campus at the Indira Gandhi Hospital premises in Dwarka, marking a significant investment in the capital’s public healthcare system.

The project, which carries an estimated cost of Rs 805.99 crore, was approved during a recent meeting of the Expenditure Finance Committee headed by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. Officials said the new medical institution is expected to be completed by 2028 and will play a major role in strengthening healthcare services and medical education capacity in Delhi.
Medical College Planned With Modern Facilities
According to government officials, the proposed campus will include a fully equipped medical college, separate hostel facilities for male and female students, housing units for faculty members, and a dedicated academic complex with advanced learning infrastructure.
The institution is being designed in line with the standards set by the National Medical Commission. Authorities said the college is planned to eventually offer 250 MBBS seats every year. Academic operations are expected to begin with an initial intake of 150 students before expanding further in later phases.
Construction Work To Be Completed in Phases
Officials stated that the project will be developed in multiple stages. The first phase will mainly focus on building the academic block, student hostels, and residential accommodation for teaching staff.
A total area of nearly 1,17,246 square metres is expected to be developed during this stage, including approximately 34,000 square metres of basement space that will be used for parking and other essential services. The academic section will feature multi-level buildings equipped with modern classrooms, laboratories, and advanced teaching support systems aimed at improving medical training standards in the capital.
The hostel facilities are expected to accommodate a substantial number of students, while faculty residences will be equipped with modern amenities for staff members associated with the institution.
PWD and Health Department To Oversee Project
The construction work will be carried out by the Public Works Department, while the Health and Family Welfare Department will supervise the overall implementation and operational planning of the project.
Officials said the government intends to adopt sustainable construction methods throughout the development process. The proposed structures will be earthquake-resistant and designed to improve energy efficiency across the campus.
Green Building Features Included in Campus Design
As part of the environmental planning, the campus is expected to include several green infrastructure features such as solar energy systems, rainwater harvesting facilities, water recycling mechanisms, and improved natural lighting and ventilation systems.
The government has also focused on ensuring accessibility for persons with disabilities. The campus design includes wheelchair-friendly pathways, ramps, lifts, and Braille signage to make educational and residential facilities easier to access for all users.
In addition, authorities plan to install modern security and safety infrastructure throughout the campus, including CCTV monitoring systems, fire alarms, and other fire safety arrangements.
Government Stresses Timely Completion
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta directed officials to maintain strict quality standards and ensure that the construction timeline is followed without unnecessary delays. She also instructed departments to implement regular monitoring systems to track progress and prevent cost overruns during execution.
Officials further stated that procurement of medical equipment, staff recruitment, university affiliation procedures, and other operational formalities will be completed in later stages in accordance with National Medical Commission regulations.
