GovernmentJobs – Gujarat Orders Performance Review of Staff Nearing Retirement Age
GovernmentJobs – The Gujarat government has initiated a fresh administrative review process targeting state employees nearing the age of 55, with departments directed to submit detailed records of staff members whose service performance has raised concerns. Officials indicated that the move is aimed at improving efficiency and accountability across government offices while identifying employees considered unsuitable for continued service in the public sector.

Departments Asked to Submit Employee Performance Reports
A recent circular issued by the Directorate of Accounts and Treasury instructed all state government departments to prepare reports on Group I to Group IV employees who will turn 55 between October 1 and December 31, 2026. Authorities have asked departments to provide comprehensive details about employees whose records may warrant closer administrative examination.
According to officials familiar with the development, the government plans to conduct an extensive assessment of employees’ professional conduct and service history before deciding whether further action, including compulsory retirement, is required in the interest of public administration.
Ten-Year Service Records Under Detailed Examination
The review process is expected to focus heavily on employees’ performance over the last decade. Departments have been directed to provide confidential assessment reports, records of disciplinary proceedings, attendance details, and evaluations of work efficiency.
Officials said that adverse remarks recorded in annual confidential reports will also be examined carefully. In addition, departments must disclose whether any employee has faced suspension, remained absent without permission, or taken prolonged medical leave during the past 10 years.
The government is also seeking information regarding pending court matters, departmental inquiries, or anti-corruption investigations linked to employees under review.
Government Focuses on Administrative Efficiency
Senior officials described the exercise as part of a broader effort to improve governance standards and strengthen public service delivery. Sources within the administration stated that some departments have struggled with employees whose work output has remained consistently below expectations for several years.
Authorities believe that retaining underperforming staff can negatively affect departmental functioning and public confidence in government institutions. By conducting these reviews, the administration aims to ensure that government offices maintain operational efficiency and accountability.
The review process is expected to be carried out separately for each department once the data collection stage is completed.
Health and Conduct Also Part of Review
Apart from professional performance, the government has instructed departments to assess employees’ overall conduct and physical as well as mental fitness for service. Officials said these factors will be considered alongside work records before any final decision is taken regarding continuation in service.
Departments have also been asked to mention whether employees were involved in any misconduct cases or faced repeated administrative complaints. Attendance consistency and workplace discipline will form an important part of the overall evaluation framework.
The move reflects the government’s intention to apply a wider set of standards while determining whether employees remain suitable for public service roles beyond the age threshold identified in the circular.
Deadline Fixed for Submission of Data
All departments have been directed to send the required reports to the Directorate of Accounts and Treasury by May 30, 2026. Once the information is received, officials will begin a department-wise scrutiny process to identify cases requiring further review.
Government sources indicated that decisions regarding compulsory retirement, if any, are likely to be taken only after the completion of detailed assessments and verification of records submitted by departments.
The development has drawn attention across administrative circles, as the review covers employees from multiple service categories and could influence future policies related to government workforce management and accountability measures in Gujarat.
