GovernanceShift – BJP Plans Return to Historic Writers’ Buildings in Kolkata
GovernanceShift – For the first time in more than a decade, the iconic Writers’ Buildings in central Kolkata is preparing to regain its role at the heart of West Bengal’s administration. The historic red structure at BBD Bag, once the seat of power for successive state governments, is now expected to become the headquarters of a new BJP-led government after the party’s electoral victory in the state.

The development marks a symbolic political shift as the Bharatiya Janata Party prepares to form its first government in West Bengal. Party leaders have indicated that the administration may eventually move from Nabanna in Howrah back to Writers’ Buildings, restoring the colonial-era complex as the state’s primary secretariat.
Swearing-In Ceremony Planned at Brigade Parade Ground
Chief minister-designate Suvendu Adhikari is scheduled to take oath on Saturday during a large public ceremony at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground. Senior BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, are expected to attend the event along with chief ministers from several BJP-ruled states.
According to sources familiar with the preparations, Adhikari could visit Writers’ Buildings later in the day with senior officials and cabinet colleagues. Although no formal announcement has been made regarding the timeline for shifting government operations, the symbolic importance of the move has already become a major talking point within political circles.
Restoration Work Underway at Historic Secretariat
The Writers’ Buildings complex is currently undergoing renovation and restoration work. Workers have reportedly been cleaning verandas, repairing corridors and restoring the structure’s old green windows as authorities prepare the premises for future administrative use.
The building, known for its long political history and architectural significance, had served as Bengal’s administrative headquarters for decades before the state secretariat was shifted to Nabanna in 2013 under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee.
Officials involved in the restoration process said significant work is still pending, and it may take time before the building becomes fully functional for government operations again. However, the renewed attention around the structure has already generated public interest across the state.
Political Symbolism Behind the Decision
Party insiders believe the proposed return to Writers’ Buildings is not only administrative but also deeply symbolic. BJP leaders reportedly see the move as an attempt to reconnect the state government with a historic centre of governance that many residents continue to associate with Bengal’s political identity.
According to sources within the party, there has long been public sentiment attached to the old secretariat building. Several BJP leaders feel that moving government operations away from Writers’ Buildings years ago had weakened an emotional connection between the administration and the people.
The decision to revive the old headquarters is being presented internally as an effort to restore continuity with Bengal’s administrative heritage. Supporters of the move argue that the building represents an important chapter in the state’s political and institutional history.
Nabanna Became Symbol of Trinamool Era
When Mamata Banerjee shifted the state secretariat to Nabanna during her first term as chief minister, the move was viewed as a major administrative transition. Over time, Nabanna evolved into the political nerve centre of the Trinamool Congress government.
Banerjee had often been associated with the belief that the building brought stability and success to her administration. The relocation gradually became one of the defining features of the Trinamool era in West Bengal politics.
For the BJP leadership, however, the transfer away from Writers’ Buildings represented a break from a long-standing administrative tradition. State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya has publicly spoken about restoring the old secretariat’s importance on multiple occasions since 2021.
Historic Building Returns to Political Spotlight
As the political transition unfolds in West Bengal, Writers’ Buildings is once again emerging as a powerful symbol of governance and legacy. The red colonial structure, which once witnessed generations of political leadership, may soon return to the centre of Bengal’s administrative affairs.
While restoration work continues and official decisions are awaited, the possibility of the BJP government operating from Writers’ Buildings has already added a historic dimension to the state’s changing political landscape.
