Fuel – The Andhra Pradesh government has moved swiftly to address an unexpected disruption in petrol and diesel availability, which led to long queues and operational difficulties across several districts. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu held a detailed review with district officials and representatives of oil marketing firms, directing them to restore regular fuel supply by Monday.
Sudden Demand Spike Disrupts Fuel Availability
Officials reported that an abrupt increase in demand, largely driven by panic buying among commercial users, caused the supply imbalance. Daily petrol consumption, typically around 6,330 kilolitres, surged sharply by 34 percent to 8,489 kilolitres on Saturday. Although demand slightly eased on Sunday, it still remained significantly above normal levels.
Diesel sales also recorded a noticeable rise. Against a usual daily consumption of 9,048 kilolitres, demand climbed to 10,556 kilolitres on Saturday. On Sunday, consumption remained marginally elevated compared to standard levels. This unexpected spike placed pressure on existing supply chains, leading to shortages at several fuel stations.
Supply Interruptions by Private Operators
District authorities highlighted that certain private fuel suppliers, including major operators, had temporarily halted distribution to their outlets. This further compounded the problem, resulting in fuel stations running dry in multiple locations.
The Chief Minister questioned oil companies about decisions such as suspending credit support to retail dealers, which may have worsened the situation. He emphasized that any action causing inconvenience to the public would invite strict scrutiny from the government.
Government Directives to Restore Normalcy
Expressing concern over delays in addressing the issue despite early warning signs, the Chief Minister instructed officials to prioritize immediate corrective measures. He stressed the need for swift results rather than prolonged assessments.
To manage the crisis, district administrations have been directed to establish dedicated control rooms and form special task forces. These teams will include personnel from revenue, police, and legal metrology departments to ensure smooth coordination until the situation stabilizes.
Focus on Preventing Black Marketing
The government has also taken steps to curb illegal practices. Authorities have been instructed to closely monitor fuel stations, deploy enforcement personnel, and install surveillance systems to prevent hoarding and black market sales.
Strict instructions were issued to ensure that fuel outlets do not display “No Stock” signs beyond the deadline set by the administration. Officials have also been tasked with investigating the root cause of the sudden disruption.
Impact on Agriculture and Essential Services
The shortage raised concerns about its potential impact on agriculture, especially during critical harvesting operations. Diesel is essential for running farm machinery and supporting aquaculture activities. The Chief Minister suggested introducing a coupon-based system for farmers to guarantee uninterrupted access to fuel during this period.
Additionally, priority is being given to emergency services and essential sectors to prevent disruptions in critical operations.
Efforts by Oil Companies and Dealers
State officials indicated that oil companies have begun reopening fuel depots to improve supply. Coordination between government agencies and oil firms is expected to accelerate the distribution process.
Industry representatives expressed optimism that the situation would improve soon. They attributed the crisis partly to supply regulation measures introduced earlier and the spread of unverified information, which led to panic buying.

Despite the challenges, authorities remain confident that the combined efforts of the government, fuel companies, and dealers will restore normal supply conditions quickly. With corrective measures already underway, the administration expects queues at fuel stations to reduce and operations to return to normal by Monday.
