Flood Protection – Delhi Plans New Yamuna Safety Wall After IIT-Delhi Study
Flood Protection – The Delhi government is preparing a long-term strategy to strengthen flood protection along the Yamuna River, with a detailed technical assessment set to guide future infrastructure work.
The Delhi government has announced plans to develop a new flood protection wall along a vulnerable section of the Yamuna River, aiming to reduce the impact of seasonal flooding in several low-lying areas of the capital. Before construction begins, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Delhi will conduct a comprehensive study to determine the most suitable design and engineering approach. Officials have indicated that the new project is expected to begin next year after the study is completed.
Existing Protection to Be Strengthened First
Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said the government’s immediate focus will be on repairing the current flood protection wall to improve safety in areas that remain at risk during the monsoon. Localities such as Yamuna Bazar, which regularly experience flooding when the river level rises, will receive priority attention while the long-term project is being prepared.
According to the minister, strengthening the existing barrier is necessary to provide temporary relief before work on the new structure starts. The proposed project will move forward only after IIT-Delhi submits its technical recommendations based on a detailed assessment of the river stretch.
Yamuna Bazar Remains Highly Vulnerable
Authorities continue to classify the Yamuna Bazar area near Kashmere Gate as one of Delhi’s most flood-prone locations. During the severe floods of 2023, water reportedly reached depths of nearly eight to ten feet despite the presence of the existing protection wall. Officials noted that this locality is often among the first to be affected whenever the Yamuna experiences a significant rise in water level during the monsoon season.
The recurring flooding has highlighted the need for stronger infrastructure capable of handling extreme weather conditions and increasing river discharge.
New Wall Planned Across a 4.72-km Stretch
The proposed flood protection wall will extend approximately 4.72 kilometres from Majnu Ka Tila to the Old Railway Bridge. The government has set a target to complete the project before a future monsoon season once construction begins. The planned structure is expected to provide improved protection for several neighbourhoods located close to the river.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the project has already received budget approval and forms part of the government’s broader efforts to address the city’s long-standing flood management challenges.
Focus on Protecting Residential Areas
Once completed, the new flood protection wall is expected to reduce the risk of flooding in several vulnerable localities, including Civil Lines, Kashmere Gate, Yamuna Bazar and Majnu Ka Tila. These neighbourhoods have repeatedly faced disruptions due to rising river levels during heavy rainfall.
Delhi has witnessed major flood events over the decades, including the devastating floods of 1978 as well as more recent incidents in 2023 and 2025. Officials believe the proposed infrastructure, supported by scientific analysis and modern engineering, will strengthen the city’s flood resilience and help safeguard residents living near the Yamuna River in the years ahead.
