FireSafety – Tughlakabad Blaze Claims Young Man Who Returned to Save Family
FireSafety – A devastating fire in Delhi’s Tughlakabad area has left several families grieving, with one of the most heartbreaking stories emerging from the death of 28-year-old Pankaj, who reportedly lost his life after re-entering a burning building in an attempt to rescue his loved ones.

Residents of the locality said Pankaj had initially been brought out of the smoke-filled structure by people helping with rescue efforts. Despite being injured and disoriented, he repeatedly asked about the safety of his family members who were still trapped inside. Witnesses said he then rushed back into the building before anyone could stop him.
Family Faced Multiple Tragedies
According to relatives, Pankaj was the main earning member of his household. He operated a mobile phone repair business in Harkesh Nagar and had worked hard to provide stability for his family. Around two years ago, he fulfilled a long-cherished dream by purchasing the flat where the family lived.
The home was shared by his mother Guddi Devi, sisters Soni and Mani, and grandmother Sushila Devi. The family had already suffered a major setback when Pankaj’s father passed away from cancer two years earlier.
Lives Lost and Others Injured
The fire claimed the lives of Pankaj, his grandmother Sushila Devi, and his elder sister Soni. Meanwhile, his mother and younger sister Mani sustained severe injuries and continue to receive medical treatment.
Family members described Pankaj as a caring son and brother who carried significant responsibilities from a young age. They said his focus was always on ensuring a better future for those around him.
Dreams Centered Around His Sisters
Relatives recalled that Pankaj took great pride in supporting his sisters. Soni was employed at a private company, while Mani was pursuing her studies and professional training. According to his uncle Suresh Chand Pandey, Pankaj often spoke about wanting both sisters to become financially independent and successful in their chosen paths.
Pandey also said that buying the flat had been a major achievement for him. The house represented years of effort and sacrifice, making it a place he deeply valued.
Another uncle, Bambam Jha, remembered speaking with Pankaj only hours before the incident. The conversation, he said, seemed completely routine, making the sudden loss even more difficult for the family to accept.
Witnesses Describe Rescue Efforts
People living nearby said rescue attempts began immediately after the blaze was brought under partial control. Volunteers and local residents entered sections of the building searching for survivors.
One resident said Pankaj was found on the ground floor in a semi-conscious state and was quickly moved outside for safety. Even then, his concern remained focused on his mother and sisters.
Witnesses recalled that he repeatedly asked rescuers about their condition. Before anyone could restrain him, he reportedly made his way back into the building. Despite managing to reach higher floors, the dense smoke and extreme conditions inside proved overwhelming.
Community Mourns the Loss
The incident has left neighbours and relatives deeply saddened. Many described Pankaj as a hardworking young man who placed his family’s well-being above everything else. His actions during the emergency have become a symbol of courage and sacrifice for those who knew him.
As investigations into the fire continue, the tragedy serves as a reminder of the devastating human cost such incidents can inflict on families and communities.
