FireSafety – Delhi Restaurant Blaze Leaves 21 Dead, Dozens Rescued
FireSafety – A devastating fire at a restaurant in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area claimed the lives of at least 21 people on Wednesday, while several others sustained injuries. Authorities said a significant number of the victims were foreign nationals, including individuals from countries in Central Asia and Africa.

Rescue Efforts Continue After Deadly Blaze
According to officials, more than 37 people were evacuated from the affected building and transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Medical authorities confirmed that 18 victims were declared dead upon arrival, while others continue to receive care for injuries caused by the incident.
The fire broke out at Lemon Green Restaurant at around 8:50 a.m., triggering a large-scale emergency operation. As flames intensified, the fire spread from the restaurant to a neighboring food establishment, increasing the scale of the disaster and complicating rescue efforts.
Firefighters Responded With Multiple Units
Delhi Fire Service personnel rushed to the scene shortly after receiving emergency alerts. Several firefighting vehicles, including water tenders, water bowsers, quick-response units, and additional fire engines, were deployed to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further.
During the operation, firefighters entered a basement area filled with dense smoke and successfully rescued three people who had become trapped inside. Emergency teams worked for hours to bring the situation under control and ensure the safety of those in the surrounding area.
Authorities Launch Investigation
Jitendra Kumar, an official associated with the South District administration and the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), said emergency mechanisms were activated immediately after information about the fire was received. Multiple Emergency Operation Centres were instructed to coordinate rescue and relief measures at the location.
Initial assessments suggest the fire may have originated from a restaurant functioning on the ground floor of the building. However, investigators have not yet confirmed the exact source of the blaze. Authorities stated that a detailed inquiry is underway to determine the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
Prime Minister Announces Financial Assistance
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow over the loss of life and extended condolences to the affected families. He also announced financial assistance for victims through an ex-gratia package.
Under the relief measures, the families of those who lost their lives will receive ₹2 lakh each, while individuals injured in the incident will be provided ₹50,000. The Prime Minister stated that all necessary support was being extended to those impacted by the fire and wished the injured a swift recovery.
Opposition Leaders Express Condolences
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi also expressed grief over the incident and conveyed sympathy to the families of the deceased. He urged Congress workers to assist local authorities in ongoing rescue and relief activities and hoped for the speedy recovery of those receiving treatment.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge similarly mourned the loss of lives and called upon the government and concerned agencies to ensure timely compensation and adequate medical assistance for all affected individuals.

As investigators continue to examine the cause of the blaze, authorities are expected to review safety standards and emergency preparedness measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
