FireSafety – A week after a devastating fire at a hotel in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar claimed 23 lives, including 14 foreign citizens, authorities have intensified enforcement measures across the city. The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) has issued notices to 352 commercial establishments following a large-scale inspection exercise aimed at identifying fire safety shortcomings and building regulation violations.
The move comes as part of a wider effort by the Delhi government to prevent similar tragedies and ensure that businesses comply with prescribed safety standards.
Citywide Inspection Campaign Uncovers Violations
According to officials, special inspection teams were formed under the supervision of district magistrates to examine a range of commercial properties. These included hotels, guest houses, restaurants, banquet venues, and other establishments that regularly receive large numbers of visitors.
During the inspections, committee members documented various irregularities related to building construction norms and fire safety measures. The findings were subsequently forwarded to Delhi Fire Services, which issued formal notices to the concerned establishments between June 8 and June 15.
Authorities said the notices outline the deficiencies observed during inspections and require owners or operators to explain their position and demonstrate compliance with existing regulations.
Establishments Given Limited Time to Respond
Officials confirmed that businesses receiving notices have been granted a period of 10 days to submit their responses. During this time, establishment owners are expected to provide relevant documentation, clarify issues raised by inspectors, and indicate steps being taken to address shortcomings.
Once the response period concludes, the authorities will examine each submission before deciding on further action. Enforcement measures may vary depending on the nature and seriousness of the violations identified during the inspection process.
Government officials stressed that the objective is not only to identify breaches but also to ensure corrective measures are implemented without delay.
Regular Monitoring to Continue Across the Capital
The inspection campaign is expected to continue in the coming weeks. Officials stated that joint committees will carry out periodic checks across different parts of the city to verify compliance with fire safety requirements and approved building norms.
Authorities have also warned that establishments operating without mandatory fire clearances or failing to meet prescribed safety standards could face immediate sealing action. The administration has emphasized that public safety remains the primary concern, particularly in locations that accommodate large gatherings or overnight guests.
The ongoing inspections are intended to strengthen preparedness and reduce risks associated with fire-related emergencies in commercial properties.
Government Signals Tougher Action on Illegal Construction
Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood said the government is taking a strict approach toward unauthorized construction activities in the capital. He announced that buildings exceeding the approved G+4 construction limit would be reviewed immediately.
According to the minister, any structure found violating sanctioned building plans or engaging in unauthorized expansion will face stringent action. Such properties may be sealed if serious violations are confirmed.
The government believes stronger enforcement of building regulations, coupled with rigorous fire safety compliance, is essential to preventing future incidents and protecting residents, visitors, and business patrons across the city.
The latest crackdown reflects a broader administrative push to strengthen accountability among commercial establishments following one of the capital’s most tragic fire incidents in recent years.
