Fire Safety – A fire safety advocacy organization has expressed serious concern following the devastating fire incident in New Delhi that resulted in the loss of 21 lives. The group urged authorities and stakeholders within the hospitality industry to move beyond immediate reactions and undertake a comprehensive review of existing safety systems to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Call for Accountability and Detailed Investigation
Speaking on behalf of the organization, trustee RA Venkitachalam emphasized the need for a deeper examination of the factors that contributed to the disaster. He noted that fire-related incidents are often followed by short-term responses, while critical questions regarding the root causes, accountability, and long-term preventive measures remain unanswered.
According to him, there is a pressing need to evaluate whether safety standards were properly enforced and whether establishments operating under questionable conditions were granted necessary approvals without adequate scrutiny. He stressed that identifying responsibility is essential if meaningful improvements are to be achieved across the sector.
Demand for Public Access to Audit Findings
The advocacy group outlined a series of recommendations aimed at strengthening fire safety practices nationwide. Among its key demands is the release of the fire forensic audit report related to the Delhi incident. The organization believes that making the findings publicly available would improve transparency and help authorities, businesses, and citizens understand the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
It argued that access to such information could play a significant role in shaping future safety policies and encouraging stricter compliance with regulations.
Importance of Maintaining Safety Infrastructure
The group also highlighted the importance of maintaining fire protection equipment and systems on a regular basis. It stated that safety infrastructure should not merely exist on paper but must remain fully operational at all times.
In addition, the organization called for clearly marked evacuation routes, unobstructed emergency exits, and well-documented emergency response procedures. These measures, it said, can significantly improve survival chances during critical situations and help emergency responders carry out rescue operations more effectively.
Fire Safety Awareness as a Life Skill
Beyond infrastructure and regulation, the organization stressed the importance of public awareness. It recommended that basic fire safety education be treated as an essential life skill that every citizen should possess.
The group encouraged broader awareness campaigns to ensure people understand how to react during emergencies, use basic firefighting equipment when appropriate, and safely evacuate affected areas. Increased public knowledge, it said, can help reduce casualties and improve overall community resilience during fire-related emergencies.

As part of its recommendations, the organization urged authorities to develop a comprehensive city-level fire safety strategy. Such a plan should identify high-risk zones, assess local vulnerabilities, and implement targeted measures to reduce potential hazards before disasters occur.
