Congress – The Congress in Rajasthan is once again facing questions over its leadership structure after fresh remarks by senior leaders reignited the long-running debate over who holds real influence within the state unit. The controversy has surfaced at a crucial time as the party prepares for upcoming panchayat and urban local body elections, exposing internal disagreements that continue to shape its political landscape.
Leadership Remarks Trigger Fresh Political Discussion
The latest discussion began when senior Congress leader Shanti Dhariwal referred to former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot as the party’s “high command” in the state. His statement quickly generated reactions from within the Congress, highlighting differences over leadership and organisational authority.
The issue gained further attention during a strategy meeting in Jaipur held to review preparations for the forthcoming local body elections. Instead of presenting a united front, the gathering reflected visible divisions, with competing loyalties and differing views on leadership emerging in full public view.
Leaders Raise Concerns Over Internal Differences
Adding to the growing debate, former Malviya Nagar Assembly candidate Archana Sharma claimed that her toughest challenge during the previous Assembly elections came from within her own party rather than from political rivals. She alleged that efforts to weaken her candidature had begun months before the polls, forcing her to overcome internal resistance throughout the campaign.
Former Hawa Mahal candidate R.R. Tiwari voiced similar concerns, alleging that some party members worked against officially nominated Congress candidates. He argued that internal sabotage played a significant role in his electoral defeat.
Tiwari also defended Dhariwal’s remarks, stating that while Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi remain the national leadership, Gehlot continues to command considerable influence in Rajasthan due to his long political experience, organisational reach and connection with party workers.
Slogans Reflect Continuing Factional Politics
The Jaipur meeting also witnessed repeated slogan-shouting in support of individual leaders despite repeated appeals from senior office-bearers to focus solely on the party.
Jaipur District Congress president Sunil Sharma urged workers to raise slogans only for the Congress organisation, Rahul Gandhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge. Congress MLA Rafiq Khan also appealed to party workers to avoid personality-based politics.
State Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra echoed the same message, advising supporters not to promote individual leaders during organisational events. However, slogans supporting different leaders continued throughout the meeting, reflecting the persistence of factional loyalties.
Gehlot Rejects Personal Leadership Claims
As the debate intensified, former minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas firmly rejected the suggestion that Gehlot could be described as Rajasthan Congress’ high command. He maintained that Rahul Gandhi alone represents the party’s central leadership and dismissed attempts to create any alternative perception.
Ashok Gehlot himself also distanced himself from the controversy. Responding to questions on the issue, he stated that decisions regarding leadership are exclusively the responsibility of the Congress high command and not individual leaders in the state.
Gehlot explained that the party’s central leadership regularly reviews political developments through surveys, organisational feedback, public opinion and consultations with elected representatives before making important decisions. According to him, Rahul Gandhi has strengthened institutional mechanisms for gathering such feedback, including during candidate selection, making speculation over leadership unnecessary.
Election Preparations Continue Amid Political Questions
The renewed leadership debate has emerged alongside other developments within the Rajasthan Congress. Former Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot’s absence from a recent Congress protest in Jaipur over the NEET paper leak issue, along with the absence of state in-charge Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, has attracted political attention and prompted discussion over coordination within the organisation.
Despite the ongoing differences, Gehlot has expressed confidence about the party’s future prospects. During recent public interactions, including his visit to Jodhpur, he said the Congress remains politically strong in northern India and expressed optimism that the party would return to power in Rajasthan in the next Assembly election. He also urged party workers to remain united.
The latest developments underline that while the Congress officially recognises Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi as its national leadership, discussions over political influence within Rajasthan continue to revolve around Ashok Gehlot and the long-standing Gehlot-Sachin Pilot equation. With local body elections approaching, maintaining organisational unity may become one of the party’s biggest political challenges.
