Bollywood – Director and choreographer Farah Khan has shared the little-known story behind the creation of the iconic Bollywood song Dard-E-Disco. Speaking during a recent visit to music composer Shekhar Ravjiani’s farmhouse, Farah recalled how an informal discussion eventually led to one of Hindi cinema’s most memorable dance tracks.
A Casual Discussion Sparked the Idea
During their conversation, Farah looked back at the early stages of the song’s development and explained that the concept originated during a gathering at singer Sonu Nigam’s residence. She remembered being with Shekhar Ravjiani and Vishal Dadlani when the topic of commercially successful songs came up.
According to Farah, the team discussed an observation reportedly shared by Bhushan Kumar, who believed that two styles of songs consistently resonated with Indian audiences—emotional tracks and disco numbers. Inspired by that thought, she suggested combining both ideas into a single title and proposed the name Dard-E-Disco.
Shekhar Ravjiani Recalls the Creative Process
Responding to Farah’s memories, Shekhar Ravjiani confirmed that she had approached the composing duo with a clear request to create a song carrying the title Dard-E-Disco. He acknowledged that the unique concept came directly from Farah, who wanted something that blended contrasting emotions into an entertaining musical number.
Farah then explained that the next step involved taking the concept to veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar. She recalled discussing several creative ideas with him before the lyrics began taking shape.

While describing the songwriting process, Farah revealed that the team requested Javed Akhtar to write the lyrics with a poetic flavour reminiscent of the style often associated with celebrated lyricist Gulzar.
