Festival – Madurai’s Chithirai Celebrations Reach Grand Peak Amid Devotee Surge
Festival – The historic Chithirai Festival in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, has entered its most vibrant phase, attracting an overwhelming number of devotees and reaffirming the deep-rooted harmony between Shaivite and Vaishnavite traditions. The annual celebration, known for its grandeur and cultural significance, continues to transform the temple city into a center of devotion and festivity.

Sacred Traditions Draw Massive Devotee Turnout
Over the past few days, lakhs of pilgrims from across the country have gathered in Madurai to take part in the rituals and processions associated with the festival. The celebrations traditionally begin at the Meenakshi Amman Temple and later extend to the Kallazhagar Temple, located about 18 kilometers away. This unique progression symbolises the spiritual unity between two major sects of Hindu worship.
The festivities at the Meenakshi temple commenced on April 19 with the ceremonial hoisting of the temple flag, marking the official start of the celebrations. One of the most significant events, the divine wedding of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareshwarar, was conducted earlier this week with great devotion. This was followed by the grand chariot procession, which saw thousands of devotees lining the streets to witness the spectacle.
Kallazhagar’s Journey Marks Key Phase
The focus of the festival then shifted to the Kallazhagar Temple, where celebrations began on April 27. On Wednesday evening, Lord Kallazhagar set out on his ceremonial journey towards Madurai. The departure drew huge crowds, with devotees eagerly gathering to witness the moment.
The deity, adorned in traditional silk garments and carried in a golden palanquin, was taken out following special rituals performed at the Karuppanaswamy shrine. As the procession moved forward, chants of devotion echoed through the air, creating an atmosphere filled with spiritual energy.
Procession Stops Inspire Devotional Fervour
During the journey, Lord Kallazhagar made several halts at key locations including Poigaikarai Patti, Kallandhiri, and Appan Thirupathi. At each stop, large gatherings of devotees assembled to seek blessings. Volunteers played a vital role in supporting the event by distributing food and refreshments to those participating in the procession.
By Thursday morning, the deity reached Moondram Mavadi in Madurai, where a grand reception had been arranged. The scene was marked by vibrant cultural expressions, with devotees dressed in traditional and mythological attire performing dances and rituals. Women carrying ceremonial lamps added to the visual splendour of the occasion.
Vaigai River Ritual to Mark Festival Highlight
Following the reception, the procession proceeded towards the Thallakulam Perumal Temple. The festival is set to reach its most anticipated moment early Friday morning, when Lord Kallazhagar will enter the Vaigai River mounted on a golden horse. This ritual, scheduled between 5:35 a.m. and 5:55 a.m., is expected to draw massive crowds along the riverbanks.
Authorities have made extensive arrangements as lakhs of devotees are expected to gather for this iconic event. The ritual holds deep religious significance and is considered one of the defining moments of the Chithirai Festival.
Closing Ceremonies Scheduled for May 6
Following the Vaigai River ceremony, additional rituals will take place, including the symbolic act of lifting Sage Mandooka’s curse. After completing these ceremonies, Lord Kallazhagar will return to the Alagar Hills.
The Chithirai Festival will conclude on May 6 with traditional closing rituals, bringing an end to one of Tamil Nadu’s most celebrated cultural and religious events.
