Festival – Delhi Marks Eid-ul-Adha With Peaceful Gatherings and Enhanced Security Measures
Festival – Thousands of residents across Delhi came together on Thursday to celebrate Eid-ul-Adha, with special prayers offered at mosques, Eidgahs, and community prayer grounds throughout the city. The festival was observed peacefully, supported by extensive security and civic management measures put in place by authorities.
Large congregations were seen at prominent prayer locations, including Jama Masjid, Nizamuddin, Seelampur, and Jamia Nagar. Following the prayers, families and friends exchanged greetings and spent time visiting nearby markets that witnessed increased footfall. Shops selling sweets, festive clothing, and traditional household items reported steady customer activity throughout the day. In several parts of the capital, community groups and volunteers organized food distribution drives for people in need, reflecting the charitable spirit associated with the occasion.
Leaders Extend Eid Greetings
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta conveyed her greetings to citizens through a social media message. She expressed hope that the festival would promote peace, compassion, and unity among people while wishing residents good health, happiness, and prosperity.
Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu also shared his wishes on the occasion. In his message, he encouraged people to pray for harmony, progress, and mutual understanding, emphasizing the importance of togetherness during the festival.
Security Measures Across the Capital
To ensure smooth celebrations, Delhi Police, along with civic agencies, implemented comprehensive security arrangements around major prayer sites and crowded market areas. Authorities focused on maintaining public order, managing traffic flow, and ensuring sanitation services remained uninterrupted during the festivities.
Officials said preparations had been made well in advance, with personnel stationed at key locations across the city. Security teams closely monitored areas expected to receive large gatherings of worshippers and visitors.
Social Media Monitoring Intensified
Authorities also maintained vigilance in the digital space during the festival. Cyber monitoring teams kept a close watch on social media platforms to prevent the spread of misinformation, objectionable content, or posts that could potentially disturb public harmony.
Officials stated that preventive measures were taken to quickly identify and address any online activity that might create confusion or tension during the celebrations.
Additional Police Deployment in Sensitive Areas
Special attention was given to districts considered sensitive from a law-and-order perspective, particularly in North-East and North Delhi. Police officials confirmed that additional personnel were deployed in these regions to strengthen security coverage.
According to officials, nearly 1,100 police personnel, supported by 23 additional security companies, were stationed in the North-East district alone. Security deployment began early in the morning, with officers present at major prayer venues from 5 a.m. onwards.
Multiple checkpoints, rapid response teams, and motorcycle patrol units remained active throughout the day. These measures were designed to ensure immediate action in case of any emergency while maintaining a safe environment for worshippers and the general public.
Strong Student Attendance During University Examinations
Meanwhile, Delhi University conducted scheduled examinations on the day of Eid-ul-Adha. University officials reported that the majority of students appeared for their exams despite the festival.
Approximately 1.35 lakh undergraduate students attended the examinations, while an estimated 200 to 300 law students were absent. The university clarified that students who could not participate because of Eid-related commitments would be given an opportunity to take special examinations after July 4, ensuring that no student is academically disadvantaged due to the festival.
