Government Plans Stronger Legal Measures
The Central Government is expected to table a revised and tougher anti-paper leak Bill in Parliament on Monday after receiving approval from the Union Cabinet on Friday. The proposed law aims to reinforce the provisions of the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, with the objective of strengthening safeguards against examination-related malpractice across the country.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a video message, said the government intends to introduce the legislation and secure its passage at the earliest opportunity during the ongoing Monsoon Session. The move is being projected as part of broader efforts to improve transparency and protect the credibility of public examinations.
Opposition Maintains Demand for Minister’s Resignation
Despite the government’s legislative push, the Opposition has shown no signs of softening its position. Leaders of the INDIA bloc continue to insist that discussions on the NEET paper leak controversy cannot begin unless Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigns and accountability is established.
Opposition parties argue that introducing a new law alone is not enough to address public concerns arising from the alleged irregularities in the examination process. According to alliance leaders, responsibility for the controversy must be addressed before Parliament proceeds with a broader debate on examination reforms.
Monsoon Session Witnessed Continued Disruptions
The first week of the Monsoon Session witnessed repeated disruptions over the NEET paper leak controversy and allegations surrounding police action against students who staged protests in Delhi. As a result, normal parliamentary proceedings were significantly affected, preventing legislative business from moving forward as scheduled.
With the government now preparing to introduce the proposed Bill, the coming days are expected to determine whether Parliament can move beyond the current impasse or whether political disagreements will continue to dominate the session.
INDIA Bloc to Finalise Parliamentary Strategy
Leaders of the INDIA alliance are expected to closely monitor the government’s next steps before deciding their floor strategy. According to a senior Opposition leader, the alliance will assess the government’s approach to the proposed legislation before taking a final call on how to respond inside Parliament.
The alliance has been holding coordination meetings before each day’s proceedings throughout the Monsoon Session. These discussions have so far reflected a united stand on the key issues related to the examination controversy and parliamentary strategy.
Additional Demands Over Student Protest Action
Apart from seeking the resignation of the Education Minister, Opposition parties have also demanded action against those responsible for the police action on students who protested in Delhi on July 20. They have argued that concerns raised by students should be addressed through dialogue rather than force.
The government, meanwhile, is expected to defend its proposed legislation as an important step toward preventing future examination leaks and ensuring greater fairness in public recruitment and entrance examinations. Whether the introduction of the Bill helps ease political tensions or leads to further confrontation is likely to become clear as Parliament resumes debate during the second week of the Monsoon Session.
