Infrastructure – Bengaluru Civic Delays and Temple Darshan Arrangements Draw Fresh Criticism
Infrastructure – Senior BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka has launched a fresh attack on the Karnataka government, alleging that prolonged infrastructure projects and poor administrative planning have created unnecessary hardships for residents and devotees alike. He accused the state administration of failing to deliver on its promises while allowing civic projects and public services to remain poorly managed.
The BJP leader said several neighbourhoods in Bengaluru continue to struggle with incomplete civic works that have stretched on for months. Referring to areas including Nagenahalli Road and Shivashankar Block in the Hebbal constituency, he claimed that drinking water and underground drainage projects remain unfinished despite work beginning nearly a year ago.
Residents Face Daily Inconvenience
According to Ashoka, the ongoing construction has left roads covered in dust and made everyday travel difficult for local residents. He alleged that the lack of coordination between the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has resulted in damaged roads, disrupted traffic movement, and unsafe conditions for pedestrians.
He further stated that local businesses have experienced financial losses because customers are finding it difficult to access commercial areas affected by the construction. Senior citizens, he added, are among those facing the greatest inconvenience as uneven roads and continuous digging have made it difficult for them to move around safely. Ashoka also claimed that several drinking water pipelines have reportedly been damaged during the works, creating additional problems for nearby residents.
Questions Over ‘Brand Bengaluru’ Vision
Criticising the government’s urban development agenda, Ashoka said the promise of building a “Brand Bengaluru” has not matched the conditions experienced by citizens on the ground. He argued that development projects should improve public life rather than create long-term inconvenience through delays and poor execution.
The Opposition leader also alleged that residents’ concerns have not received adequate attention from the Bengaluru Development Minister or the local MLA. He called on the state government to speed up pending projects and ensure that civic agencies complete the work without causing prolonged disruption to daily life.
Temple Darshan Management Also Criticised
Apart from civic issues, Ashoka also questioned the administration of special darshan arrangements at the historic Chamundeshwari Temple in Mysuru. He alleged that devotees who paid Rs 2,000 for a special quick darshan were assured that the process would be completed within about 20 minutes but instead had to remain in queues for nearly four to five hours.
According to him, the delays were caused by repeated interruptions for VIP visits, leaving ordinary devotees waiting despite paying for expedited entry. He questioned the fairness of such arrangements and asked why those who had purchased special access were not given the promised service.
Concern for Devotees During Ashadha Season
Ashoka expressed concern over the difficulties faced by elderly visitors, women, and families with young children who reportedly had to wait for extended periods. He also criticised the state administration, including the district leadership, alleging that greater attention had been given to collecting fees than ensuring an efficient and respectful experience for devotees.
He noted that the Ashadha month attracts lakhs of devotees to the Chamundeshwari Temple every year and said the government has a responsibility to manage the heavy rush while respecting religious sentiments. In his view, long delays caused by VIP movement undermine the experience of ordinary worshippers.
Call for Better Administration
Concluding his remarks, Ashoka urged the Karnataka government to introduce a transparent and time-bound darshan system while improving the management of religious institutions. He also called for faster completion of Bengaluru’s civic infrastructure projects, stating that residents deserve better planning, efficient execution, and greater accountability from public authorities.
