Encroachment – Karnataka Government Promises Tough Action After Attack on GBA Officials
Encroachment –Authorities in Karnataka have initiated legal proceedings after officials engaged in a court-directed encroachment removal operation were allegedly attacked in Bengaluru. The government has assured that those involved will be dealt with according to the law.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara has said that strict legal action will be taken against individuals accused of attacking Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) personnel during a footpath encroachment clearance drive in Bengaluru’s Shivajinagar area. Addressing reporters on Tuesday, he stated that the state government would not tolerate violence against public officials performing their official duties. He also noted that the anti-encroachment campaign had received positive feedback from many people, including those outside Karnataka.
Government Reaffirms Support for Encroachment Removal
Speaking on the incident, Parameshwara said the ongoing effort to clear public spaces has been widely appreciated. He stressed that any attempt to interfere with government officers carrying out lawful responsibilities would invite strict legal consequences. According to him, those responsible for the alleged assault will be prosecuted under the applicable laws.
Police Arrest Ten People in Connection With Incident
Following the confrontation, Karnataka Police arrested ten individuals on allegations of obstructing and assaulting officials involved in the operation. The accused have been identified as Rangaswmy, Kottresh, Parasuram, Barath, Basavaraj, Kiran, Muzahida Ahamd, Parthiban, Ranjit and Raghu.
Officials said the people affected during the incident included GBA Employees Association representative Amruth Raj, GBA Central Division Commissioner Jagadish, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Vikram Amathe, and Joint Commissioner Ramesh Banoth.
Officials Describe Obstruction During Clearance Drive
According to DCP (East) Vikram Amathe, the incident occurred near the Shivajinagar BMTC Bus Stand within the Commercial Street Police Station limits. A Greater Bengaluru Authority team had arrived to remove footpath encroachments when a group allegedly attempted to stop the operation.
Police stated that the group not only obstructed officials from carrying out their work but also allegedly assaulted them and used a spray during the confrontation. Based on a complaint filed by the Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE), a criminal case has been registered. Authorities emphasized that preventing public servants from performing official duties and attacking them are serious offences under the law.
Court-Directed Drive Faced Resistance
Earlier in the day, the Greater Bengaluru Authority had launched the encroachment removal exercise in compliance with court directions. The operation focused on clearing footpaths near the Shivajinagar Bus Stand, where vendors were reportedly occupying public space.
During the drive, officials encountered resistance from a gathering that included local vendors and protesters. The situation escalated into a confrontation, prompting police intervention to restore order and continue the operation.
Investigation Continues as Security Is Increased
Joint Commissioner (East) Ramesh Banoth confirmed that additional suspects have been identified and efforts are underway to arrest them. He said law enforcement agencies are also examining whether the incident was planned in advance or resulted from a larger conspiracy.
Banoth added that enhanced police protection has been deployed to ensure the Greater Bengaluru Authority can safely continue future encroachment removal activities in the area. Investigators are reviewing the backgrounds of those arrested while collecting further evidence as part of the ongoing inquiry.
The investigation remains active, and officials have indicated that further legal action will be taken if additional individuals are found to have participated in the alleged attack or in obstructing the government operation.
