Electric Vehicles – Delhi Civic Body Plans More Integrated Charging Hubs Across City

Electric Vehicles –   The Municipal Corporation of Delhi is preparing to expand electric vehicle charging facilities by allocating additional public land and partnering with public sector organisations to strengthen charging infrastructure across the national capital.

Delhi ev charging hubs expansion

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is taking fresh steps to improve the city’s electric vehicle ecosystem as part of the upcoming EV policy. Officials said the civic body intends to identify and reserve more land for charging infrastructure while working closely with public sector undertakings (PSUs) to establish integrated charging hubs at key locations. The initiative aims to make charging more accessible for residents and encourage wider adoption of electric vehicles.

More Public Land to Be Used for Charging Facilities

Officials familiar with the development said the civic agency plans to maximise the use of its available properties for EV charging projects. Alongside expanding land availability, the MCD is inviting PSUs to submit proposals for setting up new charging centres equipped with multiple charging points. The authority is also reviewing practical challenges that may be slowing down ongoing projects so that approvals and implementation can move forward more efficiently.

A senior MCD official said the corporation’s priority is to ensure that public infrastructure contributes effectively to the city’s transition toward cleaner transportation. According to the official, discussions are underway with participating organisations to resolve operational issues and speed up the establishment of new charging stations.

Existing Network Expected to Grow Further

The civic body already operates electric vehicle charging stations at nearly 160 municipal parking sites across Delhi. Officials said these facilities have helped build the foundation of the city’s charging network, but additional expansion is necessary to keep pace with the increasing number of electric vehicles on the roads.

The MCD is also preparing infrastructure improvements specifically designed for electric two-wheelers, which continue to account for a significant share of EV adoption. Authorities noted that several private vendors have expressed interest in developing additional charging facilities, indicating growing participation from the private sector in supporting the city’s clean mobility goals.

Operational Stations and Future Expansion

According to official data, permissions have so far been issued for 1,177 EV charging and battery-swapping stations across Delhi. Out of these approved locations, 470 stations are currently operational, while the remaining projects are expected to become functional after completing necessary infrastructure and installation work.

Officials believe that increasing the number of operational charging points will improve convenience for vehicle owners and reduce concerns related to charging availability. The integrated hubs are expected to serve multiple vehicles simultaneously, making them especially useful in busy commercial and public areas.

Focus on Major Commercial Areas

Earlier this month, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi invited proposals from around 10 public sector undertakings to develop integrated EV charging hubs near prominent markets across the city. These locations have been selected to improve accessibility for shoppers, commuters, and nearby residents while supporting the broader objective of expanding Delhi’s electric mobility network.

The proposed collaboration between the civic body and PSUs is expected to strengthen the availability of charging infrastructure and contribute to the effective implementation of Delhi’s new electric vehicle policy. With additional land allocation, improved planning, and participation from both public and private stakeholders, the city aims to create a more reliable and accessible charging network for the growing number of electric vehicle users.
