Electricity – Delhi Registers Record Power Demand as Heatwave Pushes Consumption Higher
Electricity – Delhi recorded its highest-ever electricity demand on Sunday as persistent heat conditions continued to increase power consumption across the city.
Delhi created a new record for electricity usage after its peak power demand climbed to 8,748 MW on Sunday afternoon, according to figures released by the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC). The new milestone surpassed the previous highest demand of 8,656 MW, which was recorded on June 19, 2024.
The fresh peak was logged at 3:17 pm, marking an increase of 92 MW over the earlier record. It was also 306 MW higher than the maximum demand registered during the summer season of 2025, reflecting the growing pressure on the capital’s power network during an extended spell of high temperatures.
Power Demand Continues to Rise
This is the third occasion in June that Delhi’s electricity demand has crossed the 8,000 MW level. Earlier this month, the city registered peak demands of 8,434 MW on June 10 and 8,296 MW on June 11.
SLDC data also indicated that electricity consumption remained consistently higher this year. Out of the first 29 days of June, peak demand exceeded the corresponding figures from last year on 22 days, highlighting the sustained rise in energy usage throughout the month.
Power Supply Remains Stable
Despite the unprecedented demand, electricity distribution companies reported that power supply remained uninterrupted across their service areas.
BSES Rajdhani Power Limited successfully handled a peak load of 3,906 MW, while BSES Yamuna Power Limited supplied 1,876 MW during the record demand period. Company officials said the distribution network functioned smoothly without any major disruptions.
According to the utility, preparations had already been made to manage higher summer consumption. The two distribution companies provide electricity to more than 54.4 lakh consumers, serving nearly 2.25 crore residents across South, West, East and Central Delhi.
Green Energy to Support Summer Supply
Officials also highlighted the growing contribution of renewable energy to Delhi’s electricity requirements. Nearly 2,670 MW of green power is expected to support the city’s supply during the ongoing summer season.
The SLDC has projected that if current weather conditions continue, Delhi’s peak electricity demand could cross the 9,000 MW mark before the season ends. Such a development would set another milestone for the capital’s power consumption.
Authorities have maintained that the power infrastructure is being closely monitored to ensure reliable electricity availability even if demand rises further in the coming weeks.
Warm Nights Add to Heat Stress
Alongside record electricity usage, residents continued to experience unusually warm weather. On Monday morning, the minimum temperature settled at 31.1 degrees Celsius, matching Sunday’s reading, which was already the highest minimum temperature recorded in the city in the past two years.
The lack of significant cooling after sunset has added to the discomfort for residents, increasing dependence on air conditioners and cooling appliances during the night.
Data released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) also showed that Delhi experienced its warmest summer nights in four years during the March-to-June pre-monsoon period. The average minimum temperature reached 22.9 degrees Celsius, making it the highest seasonal average since 2022.
Meteorologists believe the continued spell of warm nights has contributed significantly to the increase in electricity consumption across the national capital as households and businesses rely more heavily on cooling systems.
