Elections – UDF Surpasses Exit Polls With Strong Lead in Kerala
Elections – The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has emerged with a stronger-than-expected performance in Kerala, surpassing earlier exit poll predictions and moving firmly toward a clear majority. Congress Member of Parliament Jebi Mather described the outcome as a decisive mandate from the people, reflecting both public support for the UDF and dissatisfaction with the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF).

UDF Performance Exceeds Expectations
Speaking after early trends became clear, Jebi Mather said the alliance had crossed the 89-seat mark, bringing it closer to a three-digit tally. She emphasized that the results had outperformed projections made by exit polls, calling it a moment of pride and celebration for party workers and supporters. According to her, the mandate signals a strong anti-incumbency sentiment among voters.
Mather also pointed to what she described as governance shortcomings under the CPI(M)-led LDF administration, suggesting that public dissatisfaction played a key role in shaping the outcome.
Official Trends Indicate Clear Lead
As per the Election Commission’s initial data, the UDF has crossed the halfway mark with leads in over 80 constituencies. Within the alliance, the Congress party is ahead in around 50 seats, while its ally, the Indian Union Muslim League, is leading in several others. Meanwhile, the LDF is trailing with leads in fewer constituencies, indicating a shift in voter preference.
Counting is currently underway across multiple regions, including Kerala, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, and Puducherry. The process began with postal ballots and moved on to Electronic Voting Machine counts from the morning hours, with updates being released in real time through official channels.
Tight Security and Counting Arrangements
Authorities have implemented strict security measures at counting centres to ensure a smooth and transparent process. In some regions, including parts of West Bengal, security forces have deployed armoured patrols to maintain order during the counting process.
Election officials are closely monitoring each round of counting, with results being updated continuously to reflect the latest trends.
Malappuram District Shows Early UDF Advantage
In Kerala’s Malappuram district, early trends indicate a noticeable edge for UDF candidates across several constituencies. Candidates such as T P Ashraf Ali in Kondotty and P K Basheer in Eranad have secured early leads, while others like Aryadan Shoukath and A P Anil Kumar are also ahead in their respective constituencies.
Further leads have been recorded by candidates in Manjeri, Perinthalmanna, and Mankada, while a significant margin has been observed in Malappuram constituency, where P K Kunhalikutty is leading comfortably. Similar trends are visible in Vengara, Vallikkunnu, and Tirurangadi, reinforcing the UDF’s strong presence in the district.
LDF Holds Ground in Select Areas
Despite the UDF’s overall advantage, the LDF has managed to secure leads in a few constituencies, ensuring that the contest remains competitive in certain pockets. In Tirur, Thavanur, and Ponnani, LDF candidates are ahead by narrow margins, highlighting a closely fought battle in these areas.
These scattered leads suggest that while the UDF has gained momentum, the LDF continues to maintain support in specific regions.
Overall Political Landscape
The broader picture indicates a shift in Kerala’s political dynamics, with the UDF gaining a clear advantage in early counting trends. While final results are still awaited, the current trajectory points toward a significant electoral gain for the Congress-led alliance.
Political observers note that the final outcome will depend on how these early leads translate into confirmed victories as counting progresses throughout the day.
