Elections – Final Phase of Himachal Panchayat Polls Begins Amid Rainy Conditions
Elections – Voting for the third and concluding phase of the panchayat elections in Himachal Pradesh commenced at 7 a.m. on Saturday despite rain and strong winds affecting several districts. Election authorities have made arrangements across 1,189 gram panchayats, where more than 15 lakh eligible voters are expected to participate in the democratic exercise.

Voting Process Continues Across Rural Areas
The polling process is being conducted through traditional ballot papers rather than party-based election symbols. Voters will be able to cast their ballots until 3 p.m. Officials reported that polling activities started smoothly at designated booths, with election personnel deployed to ensure an orderly voting process.
Strong Participation Recorded in Earlier Phases
The ongoing phase follows two rounds of polling that witnessed significant voter engagement. During the first phase, conducted on May 26, voter participation reached 78.90 percent across 1,293 gram panchayats. The second phase, held on May 28, recorded an even higher turnout of 79.88 percent in 1,276 gram panchayats.
Election officials expressed satisfaction with the participation levels seen so far, highlighting the continued involvement of rural communities in local self-governance.
Thousands of Representatives Elected Unopposed
Even before the completion of polling, a substantial number of candidates have already secured victory without contest. According to official figures, 10,854 office-bearers were elected unopposed during the election process, reflecting consensus in several local bodies across the state.
Result Schedule Announced by Election Department
Officials from the State Election Department stated that the counting process for gram panchayat representatives, pradhans, and up-pradhans will take place on Saturday after polling concludes. Meanwhile, the results for panchayat samiti members and zila parishad representatives are scheduled to be declared on May 31.
Authorities have assured voters that counting arrangements have been finalized to ensure transparency and timely declaration of results.
Colour-Coded Ballot Papers Used for Different Posts
To simplify the voting process, different colours have been assigned to ballot papers for various positions. White ballot papers are being used for ward member elections, yellow for up-pradhans, and green for pradhans. Voters electing panchayat samiti members are using pink ballot papers, while blue ballot papers have been designated for zila parishad contests.
Election officials said the colour-coding system helps voters and polling staff identify the categories more efficiently during voting and counting.
Large-Scale Electoral Exercise Across the State
The three-phase panchayat election process represents one of the largest democratic exercises in Himachal Pradesh. Overall, approximately 50.89 lakh voters are eligible to choose 31,182 representatives across different tiers of rural local governance.
The positions being filled include 3,754 pradhans, 3,754 up-pradhans, 21,654 ward members, 1,769 panchayat samiti members, and 251 zila parishad members. The election outcome will determine the leadership structure of local governing institutions responsible for rural development and community administration throughout the state.
