Elections – ECI Orders Bamboo Fencing at Vulnerable Polling Stations
Elections – The Election Commission of India has introduced additional security measures ahead of the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, focusing on safeguarding polling stations that lack proper infrastructure.

Focus on Unprotected Polling Locations
Officials have identified several polling booths operating in school buildings without boundary walls, making them more accessible to outsiders. According to sources within the Chief Electoral Officer’s office in West Bengal, these locations pose a higher risk as unauthorized individuals can enter without being easily detected by security personnel stationed outside.
To address this concern, the Commission has directed authorities to install temporary bamboo fencing around such polling stations. This step is intended to create a controlled perimeter and reduce the chances of unwanted access during voting hours.
Increased Security Deployment
In addition to fencing, extra security forces will be stationed at these sensitive locations. The aim is to ensure that even if someone attempts to cross the newly installed barriers, they can be promptly stopped. Officials noted that some of these polling booths are located in remote and forested areas, where thick vegetation further complicates surveillance and increases vulnerability.
By combining physical barriers with additional personnel, the Commission hopes to strengthen overall security and maintain order during the polling process.
Doorstep Distribution of Voting Slips
Another key directive issued by the Commission relates to voter outreach. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) have been instructed to personally deliver voting slips to voters at their homes. This approach follows the model used during the recent Special Intensive Revision exercise, where officials directly interacted with residents.
Authorities have made it clear that BLOs must not delegate this responsibility to political party representatives. The Commission has emphasized that allowing such involvement could compromise the neutrality of the election process.
Strict Guidelines for Poll Officials
Clear instructions have also been issued to polling staff, including sector officers and presiding officers, to maintain complete impartiality. They have been advised not to seek or accept any assistance from political party agents during the voting process.
Furthermore, officials have been told to avoid accepting food, water, or any other items from party representatives. Instead, they must rely solely on arrangements provided by the administration. These measures are aimed at preventing any perception of bias and ensuring that the election process remains transparent and fair.
Election Schedule and Preparedness
The West Bengal Assembly elections will be conducted in two phases, scheduled for April 23 and April 29. The counting of votes is set to take place on May 4. With these enhanced measures in place, the Election Commission is working to ensure that the voting process proceeds smoothly, securely, and without interference.
Authorities believe that these steps will not only improve security at vulnerable polling stations but also reinforce public confidence in the electoral system.
