Elections – BJP Unveils Second Candidate List for Bengal Polls
Elections – The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday released its second list of 111 candidates for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, presenting a carefully balanced mix of experienced politicians and individuals from varied professional backgrounds. The party has largely avoided experimental picks, instead focusing on a calculated selection aimed at appealing to a wide voter base across the state.

Diverse Backgrounds Shape Candidate Selection
The newly announced list reflects an attempt to combine political experience with public recognition. Candidates include actors, legal professionals, former police officers, and individuals who have been part of key social and political movements. This approach signals the party’s effort to strengthen its presence across different sections of society while maintaining organizational stability.
Among the prominent names, Indranil Khan has been nominated from Behala West. Rekha Patra, who came into the spotlight following incidents during the Sandeshkhali agitation in North 24-Parganas, will contest from Hingalganj. Patra had previously entered electoral politics during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections but did not secure a win.
Focus on Public Figures and Recognisable Faces
Continuing its strategy of fielding well-known personalities, the BJP has nominated actor-turned-politician Roopa Ganguly from Sonarpur South. Ritesh Tiwari has been selected for Kashipur, while Hiranmoy Chatterjee will contest from Shyampur.
The party has also brought in administrative experience by fielding retired IPS officer Rajesh Kumar from Jagatdal. His candidature highlights the BJP’s emphasis on governance credentials and law enforcement experience as part of its campaign narrative.
Key Contests and Political Shifts
Several constituencies are set to witness high-profile contests. Former Trinamool Congress MLA Tapas Roy has been fielded from Maniktala, indicating the BJP’s continued strategy of incorporating leaders from rival parties. Actor Papiya Adhikari will contest from Tollygunj, where she is expected to face strong competition from senior Trinamool Congress leader Aroop Biswas.
In another significant development, former MP Arjun Singh has been nominated from Noapara. Lawyer Priyanka Tibrewal, known for her legal challenges against the state government, will contest from Entally, adding a legal and advocacy dimension to the party’s campaign.
Strategic Placements Across Key Regions
The list also includes Dibendu Adhikari, who will contest from Egra in East Midnapore. His candidature adds to the political significance of the region, especially with his brother Suvendu Adhikari set to contest from the high-profile Bhabanipur constituency.
Arup Choudhury has been fielded from Kamarhati, where he is likely to face seasoned Trinamool Congress leader Madan Mitra. Meanwhile, former Union Minister Nisith Pramanik has been nominated from Mathabhanga, reinforcing the party’s reliance on experienced leadership in crucial constituencies.
Calculated Strategy Ahead of Elections
Party insiders suggest that the candidate list reflects a well-planned approach aimed at minimizing internal disagreements while maximizing electoral impact. By blending grassroots workers with established political figures and new entrants, the BJP appears to be focusing on both organizational strength and public appeal.
The inclusion of individuals like Rekha Patra also points to a broader strategy of highlighting regional issues. By positioning her as a prominent face linked to the Sandeshkhali movement, the party is likely aiming to bring attention to past controversies and strengthen its political messaging against the ruling Trinamool Congress.
Overall, the second list underscores a cautious yet deliberate approach as the BJP prepares for a competitive electoral battle in West Bengal, with an emphasis on representation, recognition, and regional relevance.
