Elections – Assam Politics Heats Up After Borah Joins BJP

Elections –  With the Assam Assembly elections drawing closer, political tensions have intensified after senior Congress leader Bhupen Kumar Borah resigned from the party and announced his decision to join the Bharatiya Janata Party. The move has triggered sharp reactions from the Congress, with party leaders accusing Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of orchestrating the switch for political advantage.

Congress Alleges Political Engineering

Addressing reporters on Wednesday, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi claimed that Borah’s defection was not unexpected, pointing to what he described as a long-standing association between Borah and the Chief Minister. Gogoi said there had been widespread speculation about their close ties, but party members had initially dismissed such reports as political gossip.

According to Gogoi, concerns grew when details of confidential meetings allegedly surfaced in media reports linked to individuals close to the Chief Minister. He suggested that Borah’s swift transition from resigning from Congress to joining the BJP raised questions about prior coordination.

Gogoi further alleged that the development reflects what he described as political anxiety within the ruling camp ahead of the elections. He claimed that discussions within the state have increasingly focused on land holdings allegedly linked to the Chief Minister’s family, adding that such issues have fueled public debate in recent months.

Real Estate Allegations and Political Response

The Congress leader also argued that his party’s campaign activities have brought attention to what he termed the Chief Minister’s real estate interests. Without providing fresh documentation at the press conference, Gogoi maintained that the opposition had consistently highlighted these matters in its outreach programs.

He characterized Borah’s departure as an attempt to shift public focus away from those allegations. Despite the setback, Gogoi asserted that the Congress campaign would continue without interruption and pledged that the party would challenge the BJP’s hold on power in the upcoming polls.

The BJP has not publicly responded to the specific allegations raised during the press conference. However, the party has described Borah’s decision as a significant addition to its ranks ahead of the election season.

Chief Minister Confirms Borah’s Entry into BJP

A day earlier, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that Bhupen Kumar Borah would formally join the Bharatiya Janata Party on February 22. The announcement came shortly after Borah submitted his resignation from the Congress party.

Borah, who previously served as the Assam Congress chief, has been a prominent political figure in the state. His shift to the BJP is being viewed as a notable realignment in Assam’s political landscape at a time when parties are preparing for a closely watched electoral contest.

Election Season Intensifies Political Competition

Assam is expected to hold its Assembly elections later this year. The BJP, under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, will be seeking to retain its mandate, while the Congress aims to regain political ground after setbacks in previous elections.

Political observers note that party realignments often become more frequent in the months leading up to elections. The meeting between Borah and the Chief Minister has added to speculation about further shifts within state politics.

As campaign activities expand across constituencies, both major parties are likely to sharpen their messaging around governance, development, and leadership credibility. With voting expected later this year, the developments surrounding Borah’s move have set the tone for what could be an intensely contested election season in Assam.
