Local Language Becomes the Strongest Communication Tool

Marwari Sahu, serving as the Circle Officer in Palamu district, has adopted a unique outreach strategy that relies on regional folk music instead of conventional awareness campaigns. Through self-written and self-performed songs in Nagpuri, he explains the significance of the Special Intensive Revision and encourages residents to cooperate with election officials.

The initiative has drawn remarkable attention online, with videos of his performances crossing one million views on social media within a single day. The widespread response has also helped extend the campaign’s reach far beyond the villages where it was originally performed.

Villagers Encouraged to Participate in Electoral Roll Verification

According to Sahu, using the local dialect creates a stronger bond with rural communities, making it easier for people to understand official programmes. He said messages delivered in the language people use every day are more likely to be accepted and remembered.

During his interactions, Sahu urges eligible residents to verify that their names are included in the electoral rolls and requests them to cooperate with Booth Level Officers (BLOs) who visit homes for document verification as part of the SIR exercise. He believes this approach has increased public interest and encouraged greater participation in the ongoing revision process.

Experience from the Pandemic Inspired the Campaign

The officer explained that this was not the first time he had relied on music to spread awareness. While working as a high school teacher during the COVID-19 pandemic, he had composed and performed Nagpuri songs to educate people about health precautions and safety measures.

Encouraged by the positive public response during that period, Sahu decided to apply the same idea to the electoral awareness drive. He said the familiar style of communication quickly attracted attention, and people began sharing the videos widely across social media platforms, helping the message reach a much larger audience.

Election Authorities Appreciate the Creative Initiative

The campaign has also earned recognition from senior election officials. Jharkhand Chief Electoral Officer K. Ravi Kumar praised the effort after watching the video and described it as an effective way to engage citizens.

He said the initiative was making a meaningful difference in creating awareness among villagers and had encouraged wider public participation. Kumar also requested Sahu to compose and release another awareness song so that the campaign could continue reaching more people through digital platforms.

The office of the Chief Electoral Officer has similarly acknowledged the creative communication strategy and appreciated its contribution to voter awareness efforts.

Recent Posting Followed by Immediate Public Outreach

Marwari Sahu was posted to Ramgarh block in Palamu district around two weeks ago before being assigned additional responsibility for Panki block about a week later. Soon after taking charge, he visited Loharsi village, where he interacted directly with residents through live performances of Nagpuri songs.

Along with the musical presentation, he explained why the Special Intensive Revision is important and encouraged every eligible voter to actively participate in the verification process. The campaign demonstrates how culturally familiar communication can strengthen public engagement in official programmes while making government outreach more accessible to rural communities.
