Oath Ceremony Held on Rabindranath Tagore’s Birth Anniversary

The BJP leadership in West Bengal intentionally selected the day for the swearing-in because it coincided with the birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore according to the Bengali calendar. Party leaders described the decision as a symbolic gesture aimed at reinforcing the BJP’s connection with Bengali heritage and culture.

West Bengal BJP president and Rajya Sabha member Samik Bhattacharya said the timing of the ceremony was also meant to counter allegations made during the election campaign that the BJP did not represent Bengali cultural identity. According to party leaders, the event was designed to highlight respect for Bengal’s literary and cultural traditions.

National BJP Leadership Attends Kolkata Event

The oath-taking event drew several senior BJP leaders from across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, governors, Union ministers, and chief ministers from BJP-ruled states attended the ceremony in Kolkata. West Bengal Governor C. V. Ananda Bose administered the oath to the new Chief Minister and Cabinet members.

Security arrangements around central Kolkata remained extensive throughout the day as large crowds gathered at Brigade Parade Ground to witness the formation of the new government.

Writers’ Building Returns as Administrative Headquarters

One of the first major administrative decisions announced by the incoming government was the return of the state secretariat to the historic Writers’ Building in central Kolkata. After the ceremony, Adhikari and his ministers were scheduled to begin official work from the colonial-era administrative headquarters instead of Nabanna in Howrah district.

Nabanna had served as the state secretariat since 2013 during the Trinamool Congress government led by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Before becoming the state’s administrative center, the building had originally been planned as a garments hub during the Left Front era.

The BJP government’s move to restore Writers’ Building as the primary seat of administration is being viewed as an effort to reconnect with the state’s earlier administrative tradition. For decades, several former chief ministers, including Prafulla Chandra Ghosh and Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, operated from the historic building.

Adhikari Promises Collective Leadership Model

Ahead of assuming office, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari stated that his administration would function through collective decision-making rather than centralized leadership. He emphasized that governance under the BJP would focus on teamwork within the Cabinet and close coordination with the Central government.

Adhikari said the state administration would prioritize cooperation between West Bengal and the Centre to improve governance and development initiatives. The BJP leadership believes smoother coordination with New Delhi could accelerate infrastructure projects and administrative approvals in the state.

Trinamool Congress Holds Separate Rabindra Jayanti Programme

While the BJP celebrated the formation of its first government in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress organized a separate Rabindra Jayanti event at Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat, South Kolkata. Party leaders and supporters gathered there to mark the cultural occasion dedicated to Rabindranath Tagore.

The parallel events reflected the continuing political rivalry between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress, even as the state witnessed a major transition in power.
