Election – High Voter Turnout Marks West Bengal Polls Amid Tension

Election – The second and final phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections witnessed a notably strong voter turnout, accompanied by scattered reports of unrest and allegations from various political camps.

West bengal high turnout polls

Polling across 142 constituencies on Wednesday recorded an impressive turnout of 91.66 percent by the evening, suggesting one of the highest participation levels in recent years. Voting was conducted for more than 32 million registered voters spread across seven districts. By mid-afternoon, nearly 80 percent of voters had already cast their ballots, reflecting steady engagement throughout the day.

Security Measures and Overall Polling Environment

Security forces, including Central Armed Police Forces and state police, were deployed extensively to manage the situation. In several locations, authorities used mild force to disperse crowds and prevent escalation of tensions. Despite sporadic disturbances, officials confirmed that no major casualties or serious injuries were reported during the polling hours.

The Election Commission maintained that voting proceeded largely as planned, with no immediate decision taken on re-polling in any of the approximately 41,000 polling stations.

Turnout Trends Compared to Previous Elections

The high turnout has drawn attention, especially when compared with earlier election phases and past assembly polls. The first phase held earlier this month had already recorded a participation rate of around 93 percent. Historically, the 2011 state elections saw a turnout of just over 84 percent, marking a significant increase in voter engagement over the years.

Reports of Violence Across Districts

Isolated incidents of violence and vandalism were reported from multiple regions, including parts of Nadia, Hooghly, South 24 Parganas, and several areas within Kolkata. Clashes between party workers, damage to property, and disruptions near polling booths contributed to tension in certain pockets.

In Bhabanipur, a high-profile constituency, a brief confrontation occurred when political supporters gathered near a polling station, raising slogans as a prominent opposition candidate arrived to cast his vote. The situation escalated quickly but was brought under control after security personnel intervened and cleared the area. Voters in queues experienced temporary panic, though polling resumed without major delay.

Disputes Inside Polling Stations

Tensions were also reported inside some polling booths. In one instance in central Kolkata, a disagreement broke out between a candidate and polling officials after a representative was asked to leave due to space constraints. The situation intensified briefly when members of rival parties became involved, though officials eventually restored order.

Allegations of Assault and Vandalism

In Nadia district, a polling agent reportedly sustained injuries following an alleged attack. According to claims made by local political representatives, the individual was assaulted by a group of workers from a rival party. However, these allegations were denied by the accused side, and a formal complaint has been registered with the police for investigation.

Elsewhere, incidents of vandalism were reported, including damage to vehicles belonging to political candidates and destruction of temporary party camps. These events contributed to heightened tensions in certain areas but did not significantly disrupt the overall voting process.

Claims of Voting Irregularities

Concerns regarding electronic voting machines also surfaced during the day. Some political leaders alleged malfunctioning devices and claimed that voting options were obstructed in certain booths. They demanded immediate action, including re-polling in affected locations. Election authorities have yet to confirm these claims, and no official directive had been issued by the evening.

Political Reactions Following Voting

After casting her vote, a senior state leader criticized the role of central forces, alleging that they acted in a manner that intimidated voters and party workers. She questioned the fairness of the election process and expressed confidence in her party’s chances of returning to power despite the challenges.

Opposition leaders, on the other hand, raised concerns about irregularities and demanded strict monitoring to ensure transparency in the counting process.
