FIFA – Infantino Defends Independent Balogun Ruling After Trump Call

FIFA –  FIFA President Gianni Infantino has said the governing body’s judicial panels acted independently when they decided to defer enforcement of Folarin Balogun’s one-match suspension, despite confirming that U.S. President Donald Trump contacted him about the case.

The decision means Balogun remains available for the United States’ World Cup round-of-16 match against Belgium in Seattle on Monday. The case has prompted criticism from Belgian football officials and UEFA, with both questioning the implications of FIFA’s ruling for disciplinary consistency.

Red Card Came During Bosnia and Herzegovina Match

Balogun was dismissed during the United States’ 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32 on July 1. The striker received a red card after an incident involving defender Tarik Muharemovic, whom he was judged to have stamped on during the match.

FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee later imposed a one-match ban. However, it placed the sanction under a one-year probationary period, meaning the punishment will not be enforced unless there is a further breach during that time.

The committee acted under Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, which allows disciplinary sanctions to be suspended in certain circumstances. As a result, Balogun can be selected for the United States’ next match.

Belgium and UEFA Challenge the Decision

The Belgian Football Association responded sharply after the ruling was announced, saying it was surprised by the outcome. UEFA also criticised the decision, arguing that it risked undermining confidence in football’s disciplinary standards.

The reaction has added pressure around a case that could set a notable precedent at the tournament. Balogun is the leading scorer for the U.S. team and his availability could be significant in the knockout-stage fixture.

Infantino Stresses FIFA Judicial Independence

Infantino said FIFA’s disciplinary process is not directed by its president or outside political figures. He stated that the organisation’s judicial bodies operate separately, applying the relevant rules to the facts of each case.

According to Infantino, those panels must retain their autonomy for FIFA competitions to maintain credibility. He said the governing body’s structure requires decisions to be made through formal legal procedures rather than through personal or external influence.

The FIFA president added that he does not always share the same view as disciplinary panels after their rulings are issued. Still, he said he accepts their authority and respects their role within the organisation.

Trump Discussed the Case With FIFA President

Infantino confirmed that Trump had called him while the Balogun matter was being considered. He said the two regularly discuss issues connected to the World Cup, and described the conversation as part of wider contact he receives from government leaders, football representatives and business figures.

He said he informed Trump that an active legal process was underway and that the competent FIFA bodies would decide the case. Infantino maintained that the process followed FIFA’s established governance rules.

Trump had earlier said in an interview that he spoke with Infantino and asked FIFA to revisit the red card issued to Balogun.

Potential World Cup First in Seattle

Data from Opta indicates that no player has appeared in his team’s following World Cup match after receiving a red card since the yellow and red card system was introduced in 1970.

If Balogun plays against Belgium, he would become the first player to do so in World Cup history. The match will therefore carry attention beyond the result, as FIFA’s disciplinary decision continues to face scrutiny.
