Election – Assam NDA Secures Historic Third Term With Landslide Victory
Election – Assam’s political landscape witnessed a decisive outcome as the ruling alliance returned to power with an overwhelming mandate, marking its third consecutive term in government. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reinforced his stronghold by winning the Jalukbari constituency for the sixth straight time, securing a remarkable margin of 89,434 votes. The results underline both his enduring popularity and the broader electoral success of the alliance across the state.
NDA Achieves Record-Breaking Performance
The National Democratic Alliance delivered its strongest performance yet in Assam, winning 102 out of 126 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the dominant force within the coalition, securing 82 of the 90 seats it contested. For the first time, the party achieved a clear majority independently in the state assembly. Its allies, including the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People’s Front, contributed significantly with 10 seats each, strengthening the alliance’s overall position.
Opposition Faces Significant Setback
The election proved challenging for the Opposition, particularly the Congress party, which managed to win only 19 seats despite fielding candidates in a large number of constituencies. Other parties such as the All India United Democratic Front and Raijor Dal secured two seats each, while the Trinamool Congress claimed a single seat. Several smaller regional parties failed to win any constituencies, reflecting a fragmented and weakened opposition front.
Key Leaders Experience Electoral Losses
The results also brought notable defeats for several prominent Opposition figures. Congress state president Gaurav Gogoi lost the Jorhat seat to a BJP candidate by over 23,000 votes. Other senior leaders, including Debabrata Saikia, Lurinjyoti Saikia, and Ripun Bora, were also unable to retain their constituencies. These outcomes highlight the scale of the ruling alliance’s dominance in the election.
Strong Performance by Ruling Party Leaders
Within the ruling camp, several senior ministers and leaders secured comfortable victories. Among them were Ajanta Neog, Ranoj Pegu, Pijush Hazarika, Ashok Singhal, Kaushik Rai, and others who maintained their positions. Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary also registered a significant win, while AGP leaders Atul Bora and Keshav Mahanta held their seats. The BPF continued its influence in the Bodoland Territorial Region, with multiple leaders and representatives emerging victorious.
Limited Success for Opposition Candidates
Despite the overall setback, a few Opposition candidates managed to retain their constituencies. Leaders such as Wajed Ali Choudhury, Rekibuddin Ahmed, and others from the Congress held onto their seats. AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal secured a win, while Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi retained his constituency. These isolated victories, however, did little to alter the overall balance of power.
Election Participation and Representation
The election saw a total of 722 candidates contesting across all constituencies in a single-phase poll. While participation was high, representation of women remained limited. Out of 59 female candidates, only six were elected, including four from the BJP and one each from AGP, BPF, and Congress.
Sarma’s Political Journey and Influence
At the centre of the electoral success is Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has represented Jalukbari since 2001. His political career has spanned different phases, including his earlier association with the Congress before joining the BJP in 2015. He played a crucial role in the formation of the party’s first government in Assam in 2016 and later assumed the role of chief minister in 2021.
Sarma is widely recognized for expanding the party’s presence across the Northeast. His governance approach has combined development initiatives with policies focused on regional identity. However, his tenure has also been marked by controversies related to policy decisions and public remarks, drawing criticism from opposition parties.
Leadership Changes in Congress
Following the election results, senior Congress leader Jitendra Singh stepped down from his role as the party’s general secretary in charge of Assam, accepting responsibility for the party’s performance in the polls. The move reflects internal reassessment within the party after one of its weakest showings in the state.
