EducationInfra – The Delhi government has initiated a large-scale structural inspection of all government-run schools across the national capital to evaluate the condition of buildings and the availability of essential student facilities. The move comes after serious concerns were raised regarding poor infrastructure, sanitation, and safety arrangements in several schools.
Chief Minister Conducts Surprise School Inspection
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited Government Sarvodaya Vidyalaya in Roop Nagar on Friday morning following complaints from students and parents about inadequate facilities. During the unannounced inspection, she entered classrooms and interacted directly with students to understand the situation on the ground.
Students reportedly highlighted several problems related to drinking water, sanitation, and safety measures inside the campus. Many informed the chief minister that water coolers and RO systems had not been functioning for a long period, forcing them to rely on regular tap water for drinking purposes.
Concerns Raised Over Toilets and Cleanliness
Apart from drinking water issues, students also complained about poorly maintained toilets within the school premises. According to their feedback, many toilet doors were damaged, regular cleaning was lacking, and water supply remained irregular in several sections of the campus.
The inspection also revealed shortcomings in hygiene management and maintenance practices. Officials accompanying the chief minister were instructed to immediately address sanitation-related problems to ensure students receive a healthier learning environment.
Fire Safety Systems Found Non-Operational
During the review, the chief minister found that the fire safety infrastructure at the school was not operational. Expressing concern over the condition, she warned officials against negligence in matters involving student safety.
She directed the concerned departments to urgently restore all non-functional safety systems and ensure that similar lapses are not repeated in other schools. Students additionally raised concerns regarding a shortage of teachers, which they said was affecting classroom learning and academic activities.
Structural Audit to Cover All Government Schools
Following the inspection, the Delhi government announced a detailed structural audit of all government schools in the city. The exercise will focus on assessing the strength and stability of school buildings, along with the condition of key facilities including drinking water systems, toilets, cleanliness standards, and fire preparedness arrangements.
According to the government, the audit is aimed at identifying schools that require urgent repairs, rebuilding, or redevelopment work. Departments concerned have been instructed to begin preparations for the assessment process.
Hundreds of School Buildings Need Redevelopment
The chief minister stated that nearly 700 government schools in Delhi may require new infrastructure or extensive renovation work. Many of these buildings are reportedly between 40 and 50 years old and have deteriorated significantly over time.
The government plans to evaluate whether existing structures remain safe for students and staff. The audit findings are expected to help authorities prioritise redevelopment projects and allocate resources more effectively.
Focus on Modern Facilities and Student Welfare
Calling schools important centres of learning and development, the chief minister said the administration is committed to improving accountability and addressing the real needs of students. She added that the government has been working to strengthen school infrastructure and upgrade basic facilities over the past year.
The broader plan includes providing safe classrooms, better sanitation, reliable drinking water systems, digital learning tools, and modern educational facilities across government schools in Delhi. Authorities believe these improvements will help create a safer and more supportive environment for students.
