Education – St Stephen’s College Appoints First Woman Principal in Historic Move

Education –  Susan Elias officially assumed charge as the new principal of St Stephen’s College on Monday, creating a historic moment for one of India’s most respected educational institutions. With her appointment, Elias becomes the first woman to lead the college since its establishment more than 145 years ago. Her arrival marks a significant chapter in the institution’s long history, although the transition has unfolded amid ongoing differences between the college administration and Delhi University.

Appointment Draws University Scrutiny

The appointment was formally announced through a notification released on May 12. Shortly afterward, Delhi University raised concerns regarding the selection procedure, stating that the process may not have fully aligned with the regulations prescribed by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The university subsequently communicated its objections to the college and sought guidance from the UGC before any further administrative action could be considered.

On Monday, Delhi University Registrar Vikas Gupta confirmed that the university had already approached the UGC regarding the matter. He said the institution would wait for additional directions from the regulatory body before deciding its next course of action.

Transition Takes Place Amid Administrative Questions

Even after Elias began her tenure, certain administrative details remained unresolved. The principal’s section on the college’s official website had not yet been updated with her profile. At the same time, former principal John Varghese continued to appear on the website as a faculty member in the English Department, while references identifying him as principal were still visible.

Sources within the college indicated that Varghese circulated a message to faculty and staff members on Sunday that appeared to signal the conclusion of his term. However, there has been no official confirmation regarding whether he will continue serving in an academic role at the institution.

Debate Over Former Principal’s Future Role

The question of Varghese’s position after completing his tenure has become another point of discussion between Delhi University and the college administration. University authorities have reportedly objected to a proposal that would allow him to continue in the English Department following his tenure as principal.

The disagreement adds to a series of administrative issues that have recently highlighted differences in interpretation between the university and the autonomous college regarding governance and personnel decisions.

No Formal Assumption Ceremony Reported

College sources also noted that no formal public event appeared to have been organised to mark the transfer of responsibilities. Traditionally, leadership changes at educational institutions are often accompanied by a ceremonial gathering involving faculty members, staff and other stakeholders.

According to an official familiar with developments, there was no information available regarding any official ceremony linked to Elias’s assumption of office. The transition therefore appeared to take place without the customary public event generally associated with such occasions.

Historic Moment for St Stephen’s College

Founded in 1881, St Stephen’s College has long been regarded as one of India’s leading centres of higher education. Elias’s appointment represents a landmark achievement for the institution, reflecting a notable change in its leadership history.

At the same time, the development has brought renewed attention to the continuing discussions between Delhi University and the college over matters related to administration, institutional autonomy and governance. As the UGC reviews the concerns raised by the university, attention is likely to remain focused on how the situation evolves in the coming weeks.
