Education – A growing debate has emerged in the academic community after a group of scientists, educators, and researchers raised objections to a conference hosted by IIT-Mandi that included discussions on topics such as reincarnation, astrology, near-death experiences, and communication with the deceased. The scholars have expressed concern that such subjects were presented within the framework of a premier technical institution despite the absence of broadly accepted scientific evidence supporting them.
Open Letter Calls for Government Attention
In a public statement released on Friday, the signatories urged the Ministry of Education to examine the matter and take appropriate action. They argued that institutions known for scientific research and technological advancement should maintain rigorous academic standards and avoid promoting concepts that have not been validated through established scientific methods.
The researchers also sought accountability from the institute’s leadership, stating that hosting discussions centered on controversial claims could affect the credibility of scientific education and research. According to the letter, academic platforms should encourage evidence-based inquiry while clearly distinguishing between scientific investigation and unverified beliefs.
Conference Draws Scrutiny
The controversy is linked to the “Mind, Brain and Consciousness Conference 2026,” which was organized by IIT-Mandi’s Indian Knowledge System and Mental Health Applications Centre between June 3 and June 6. The event focused on various aspects of consciousness and human cognition.
Questions surrounding the conference intensified after reports suggested that participation was mandatory for certain faculty members and students. Critics argued that compulsory attendance at sessions involving disputed topics could create concerns regarding academic freedom and scientific integrity.
Concerns Over Specific Sessions
Particular attention has been directed toward a session dedicated to reincarnation, out-of-body experiences, and afterlife communication. Discussions reportedly covered subjects including near-death experiences, claims of consciousness existing beyond the body, and alleged interactions with deceased individuals.
The authors of the open letter stated that these topics remain outside the scope of accepted scientific consensus. They argued that presenting such ideas without strong empirical support risks creating confusion between evidence-based research and speculative claims.
Questions Raised About Speakers
The researchers also questioned the backgrounds of some individuals who participated in the discussions. According to the letter, certain speakers were associated with religious or spiritual organizations and, in the view of the critics, did not possess the scientific expertise required to substantiate the claims being examined.
The participation of senior academics, including IIT-Mandi Director Prof. Laxmidhar Behera and IIT-Kanpur faculty member Prof. Kunal Mooley, was also highlighted. The signatories noted that sessions chaired by faculty members from leading educational institutions may be interpreted as lending academic legitimacy to ideas that remain scientifically unproven.
Scientific Community Cites Lack of Evidence
The open letter emphasized that decades of scientific investigation have not produced conclusive evidence supporting reincarnation, communication with the dead, or out-of-body experiences. The researchers pointed to controlled studies conducted over many years, stating that such investigations have not demonstrated reliable proof of information transfer beyond normal human biological processes.
The statement also addressed astrology, describing it as a field that has repeatedly failed scientific testing. Citing research conducted in India and other countries, the authors noted that astrologers have generally not demonstrated predictive accuracy beyond what could occur by chance when examined under controlled conditions.

The issue has reignited broader discussions about the role of higher educational institutions in examining unconventional ideas. While some argue that universities should explore a wide range of subjects, critics maintain that scientific institutions must ensure that discussions are grounded in evidence and clearly distinguish research findings from belief-based claims.
