Education – The Delhi government has cleared a major infrastructure project aimed at improving student accommodation at Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), marking a significant step toward strengthening medical education support systems in the capital.
Approval for New Hostel Buildings
The Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) has given its approval for the construction of two separate hostel complexes for male and female students within the MAMC campus. The project, with an estimated cost of Rs 573.41 crore, is expected to address the growing demand for residential facilities among students.
Officials confirmed that the construction work will be carried out over a period of 36 months. The initiative is being viewed as a necessary upgrade to match the increasing intake of medical students in recent years.
Rising Student Numbers Create Pressure
During the meeting, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted the steady rise in student admissions at MAMC. Over time, the annual intake has increased from 150 to 250 students, leading to a shortage of available hostel rooms.
As a result, many students have been compelled to share limited accommodation, while others have struggled to secure hostel space altogether. The situation has underscored the urgent need for expanded residential facilities within the campus.
Aging Infrastructure Raises Concerns
Another key issue discussed was the condition of the existing hostel buildings. Constructed between 1965 and 1982, these structures have significantly aged and no longer meet modern standards or capacity requirements.
Officials noted that the new project is intended not only to expand capacity but also to replace outdated facilities with more efficient and comfortable living spaces for students.
Project Details and Cost Allocation
According to the approved plan, the girls’ hostel will be developed at site ‘A’ with a budget allocation of Rs 269.19 crore. The boys’ hostel, to be constructed at site ‘B’, will have a projected cost of Rs 304.22 crore.
Both buildings will include comprehensive infrastructure, such as basement levels, superstructures, and complete civil and electrical installations. The design aims to ensure functionality, safety, and convenience for residents.
Timeline and Execution Plan
Authorities have outlined a clear implementation schedule for the project. The initial six months will be dedicated to planning and necessary approvals, followed by approximately 30 months of construction work.
The chief minister stated that the land required for the project is already available, allowing the construction process to begin soon after administrative and financial clearances are completed.

Officials emphasized that the project is purely aimed at improving student welfare and does not involve any commercial objectives. The primary goal is to provide better living conditions that support academic performance and overall well-being.
