The anticipated visit underscores the increasing strategic relevance of ties between New Delhi and Abu Dhabi at a time when West Asia is witnessing heightened geopolitical shifts.
Renewed Momentum in Bilateral Engagement
The proposed stopover comes shortly after UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan visited India in January, marking another step in sustained high-level exchanges between the two countries. Over recent months, senior Indian officials have maintained active diplomatic contact with the Gulf nation, reflecting a consistent effort to deepen cooperation.
In April, both National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar travelled to the UAE. Their visits highlighted India’s intent to stay closely engaged with a key regional partner amid evolving political and economic developments.
Focus on Security and Regional Stability
During his discussions in Abu Dhabi, Ajit Doval reviewed progress under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework. The talks also covered pressing regional issues, particularly concerns related to security and energy flows. The meeting included senior Emirati leadership, signalling the importance both sides attach to maintaining stability in the region.
Shared concerns were evident over ongoing geopolitical tensions, including uncertainties surrounding interactions between the United States and Iran. Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global energy route, have also been a significant point of discussion, given their potential impact on international oil supply chains.
Jaishankar Visit Reinforces Diplomatic Outreach
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s visit further reinforced the depth of India-UAE relations. His discussions emphasised continuity in bilateral cooperation despite a rapidly changing regional environment. The UAE currently ranks as India’s third-largest trading partner and serves as its second-largest export destination.
India’s exports to the UAE crossed 36.6 billion dollars in the financial year 2024–25, covering a wide range of sectors including petroleum products, gems and jewellery, textiles, food items, chemicals and engineering goods. In return, India stands as the UAE’s second-largest trading partner.
Both nations have set an ambitious target of achieving bilateral trade worth 200 billion dollars by 2032, reflecting confidence in the long-term potential of the relationship.
Iran Reaches Out Amid Regional Developments
Amid the ongoing situation in West Asia, Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi held a phone conversation with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. The discussion focused on the broader regional scenario and recent developments.
The call came shortly after Araghchi’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. Jaishankar later noted that the conversation covered multiple aspects of the evolving situation, underlining the importance of continued dialogue during a period of uncertainty.
