Demographic Crisis – Haryana Election Remark Revives Debate on Gender Imbalance

Demographic Crisis –  A political comment made during a municipal election campaign in Haryana has once again drawn public attention to the state’s long-standing gender imbalance and its social consequences.

A statement made by BJP MLA Bimla Chaudhary during a public rally in Rewari has sparked discussion across political and social circles. Speaking at an event held in support of municipal council candidate Vinita Pippal, the legislator told unmarried men in the audience that she would take responsibility for helping them find brides if the BJP secured victory in the local body elections.

The remark, delivered in a light-hearted tone before a cheering crowd, quickly became the most talked-about moment of the gathering. While supporters at the venue reacted with laughter, the statement also reopened a deeper debate around Haryana’s gender imbalance and changing marriage patterns in several districts of the state.

Leaders Share Light Moment During Rally

During the public meeting, Chaudhary appealed to women voters to support the BJP candidate and added that arranging marriages for local bachelors would also become her responsibility. Senior BJP leader and Haryana Health Minister Arti Rao was present on the stage during the event.

Rao responded humorously to the MLA’s comment, saying it appeared a “marriage bureau” had been launched in Rewari. The exchange generated amusement among party workers and people attending the rally.

However, the political remark soon spread widely on social media and triggered fresh conversations regarding Haryana’s demographic challenges, especially in rural regions where the shortage of women has increasingly affected marriage prospects for men.

Gender Imbalance Remains a Major Concern

Several districts in southern Haryana, including Rewari, Mahendragarh, Jhajjar and parts of Gurugram, have faced concerns related to declining female population ratios for decades. Experts and social observers have repeatedly linked the issue to female foeticide, gender discrimination and preference for male children.

According to the 2011 Census, Haryana recorded 879 women for every 1,000 men. The child sex ratio in the 0–6 age category stood even lower at 834 girls per 1,000 boys, highlighting the extent of sex-selective practices that affected demographic balance over many years.

The shortage of women in some rural communities has gradually altered traditional marriage arrangements. In many cases, families have looked beyond their districts and even outside the state to find brides for eligible men.

MLA Claims to Have Helped Arrange Marriages

After the rally, Chaudhary said she had previously helped several unmarried men from Rewari and nearby villages find life partners from districts including Palwal and surrounding regions.

Describing herself as a daughter of Palwal, the MLA stated that many marriages had already been arranged between men from areas such as Rampura and Bijlighar and women from nearby districts. She also repeated her appeal to voters while referring to those efforts.

Her comments have generated mixed reactions online and offline. While some people viewed the remarks as political humour aimed at connecting with local audiences, others argued that the issue reflects a much deeper social reality that should not be treated casually during election campaigns.

Social Challenges Continue Beyond Politics

Haryana has witnessed multiple government campaigns over the years focused on improving the condition of women and addressing the declining sex ratio. Initiatives promoting girl child education and awareness against gender-based discrimination have been implemented at both state and national levels.

Despite these efforts, demographic experts believe the effects of decades of imbalance continue to shape social structures in many parts of the state. Marriage migration, changing family arrangements and growing pressure on rural communities are among the long-term outcomes often discussed in policy debates.

The recent political remarks have once again highlighted how demographic concerns remain closely connected to everyday life and public discourse in Haryana.
