DelhiSafety – AAP Demands Accountability After Series of Fatal Delhi Incidents
DelhiSafety – Aam Aadmi Party leader and Municipal Corporation of Delhi Opposition Leader Ankush Narang has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party-led civic administration of failing to prevent a series of building collapses and fire tragedies that have resulted in multiple deaths across the national capital. In a letter addressed to the Mayor on Tuesday, Narang sought a detailed discussion in the Municipal Corporation House regarding recent incidents and called for accountability from officials responsible for oversight and enforcement.
Call for Discussion in Municipal House
According to a statement issued by the Aam Aadmi Party, Narang urged the Mayor to place the issue on the agenda of the upcoming House meeting. He argued that several recent disasters have highlighted weaknesses in monitoring systems, inspection mechanisms, and enforcement of safety regulations. He also demanded that reports from relevant departments be presented before elected representatives for scrutiny.
Concerns Over Building Collapse and Fire Tragedies
Referring to a building collapse in Saidulajab on June 2, Narang said the incident involved a five-storey structure that was allegedly under illegal construction. The collapse claimed six lives and left several others injured. He described the tragedy as a serious warning about shortcomings in construction oversight and regulatory enforcement.
Narang also cited the devastating fire at Lemon Green Restaurant in Malviya Nagar on June 3. The blaze resulted in the deaths of 21 people, while around 40 others sustained injuries. He said the incident deeply affected residents across Delhi and raised concerns regarding compliance with fire safety requirements.
Additional Incidents Raise Questions
The Opposition leader further referred to a fire in a five-storey residential building in Tughlakabad Extension, Govindpuri, on June 12. The incident led to the deaths of three people and caused injuries to several others. He also pointed to separate fire outbreaks at Punjabi Tadka Restaurant in Kalkaji and a major showroom in Rajouri Garden on June 14, alleging that these incidents reflected administrative lapses and inadequate implementation of safety measures.
According to Narang, recurring accidents linked to illegal construction activities, violations of fire safety norms, and insufficient inspections demonstrate serious gaps in the functioning of the civic body’s monitoring framework.
Demand for Action Against Responsible Officials
In his communication to the Mayor, Narang called for responsibility to be fixed on officers and employees found negligent in carrying out their duties. He said disciplinary measures should be taken wherever lapses are established and stressed that transparency in departmental reporting is necessary to restore public confidence.
Appeal for Citywide Safety Measures
Highlighting another major fire reported on June 22 in the Minto Road and Meer Dard Road area, Narang noted that battery rickshaws, timber storage units, residential properties, and dozens of informal dwellings were affected. The incident caused significant damage to property and reportedly resulted in casualties.
To prevent similar events in the future, he urged the civic administration to launch a comprehensive drive against illegal constructions across Delhi. He also recommended large-scale fire safety audits of commercial establishments and public buildings, along with the preparation of a detailed action plan focused on prevention, enforcement, and regular inspections.
Narang maintained that public safety must remain a top priority and said the recent incidents underscore the need for immediate corrective measures by the Municipal Corporation. He emphasized that stronger enforcement and proactive monitoring are essential to reducing risks and protecting residents from avoidable tragedies.
